Lisa Howard Sings Her Dream Roles from Ragtime, Company, & The Baker’s Wife

(lively music) Hi, I’m Lisa Howard, and currently I am starring as Tammy in Escape to Margaritaville over at the Mariott Marquis Theater. And right now I’m gonna sing three songs from my dream role Broadway bucket list. The first song I’m gonna sing is “Back to Before” from Ragtime. That show, when I saw it, blew my mind, and I think I’ve been waiting to play the role of Mother ever since. So hopefully, fingers crossed, I’ll get to do it someday. (“Back to Before”) ♪ There was a time ♪ ♪ When you were the person in motion ♪ ♪ I was your wife ♪ ♪ It never occurred to want more ♪ ♪ You were my sky ♪ ♪ My moon and my stars and my ocean ♪ ♪ We can never go back to before ♪ ♪ We can never go back to before ♪ (lively music) This song, I first heard Patti LuPone sing at the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall, and I would listen to it on repeat over and over and over again because I thought it was just the most amazing song, and the way she sang it was amazing. And I have always wanted to sing this song and maybe play the role too. (“Being Alive”) ♪ Somebody need me too much ♪ ♪ Somebody know me too well ♪ ♪ Somebody pull me up short ♪ ♪ And put me through hell ♪ ♪ And give me support ♪ ♪ For being alive ♪ ♪ Make me alive ♪ ♪ Make me alive ♪ ♪ Make me confused ♪ ♪ Mock me with praise ♪ ♪ Let me be used ♪ ♪ Vary my days ♪ ♪ But alone is alone ♪ ♪ Not alive ♪ ♪ Somebody crowd me with love ♪ ♪ Somebody force me to care ♪ ♪ Somebody let me come through ♪ ♪ I’ll always be there ♪ ♪ As frightened as you ♪ ♪ To help us survive ♪ ♪ Being alive ♪ ♪ Being alive ♪ ♪ Being alive ♪ I have been singing this song, “Meadowlark” from The Baker’s Wife, since I graduated from college. I’ve used it for auditions. I’ve used it in caberet shows. It’s on of my all-time favorite songs. It’s a great story song. And I hope someday I get to sing it on the big stage. (“Meadowlark”) ♪ And now I stand here starry-eyed and stormy ♪ ♪ Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb ♪ ♪ A beautiful young man appears before me ♪ ♪ Saying, “Come” ♪ ♪ “Oh, won’t you come” ♪ ♪ And what can I do if finally for the first time ♪ ♪ The one I’m burning for returns the glow ♪ ♪ If love has come at last it’s picked the worst time ♪ ♪ Still I know ♪ ♪ I’ve got to go ♪ ♪ Fly away meadowlark ♪ ♪ Fly away on the silver morning ♪ ♪ If I stay I’ll grow to curse the dark ♪ ♪ So I’m off where the days won’t bind me ♪ ♪ I know I leave wounds behind me ♪ ♪ But I won’t let tomorrow find me ♪ ♪ Back this way ♪ ♪ Before my past once again ♪ ♪ Can blind me ♪ ♪ Fly away ♪ ♪ And we won’t wait ♪ ♪ To say goodbye ♪ ♪ My beautiful young man ♪ ♪ And I ♪ (lively music)
