Learning trades, having fun in Baker City

A lot of you are really at a key time in
your life, looking at training and career options, and we hope we make a difference today. “Good morning!” (Crowd responds: Good morning!) Welcome to the ODOT Baker Maintenance facility Construction
and Utilities Career Day (applause). We’ve got over 500 high school students here today. You
guys are going to learn a lot, get your hands dirty…
“Get in there.” I brought students from both Vale and Nyssa High Schools. “This is how they pull the poles out of the ground.”
I’m Sydney Stonebrink, and I came from Enterprise, Oregon. “Okay swing it to the left.” I feel like a lot of people look at me because I’m really small and they’re like, “Oh, she can’t do
that,” and I’m just like, “Watch me!” “Excellent! Have you done this before?” As
of today, there’s seven million jobs in this country that are unfilled. We don’t
have enough people to fill the jobs that you’re gonna see today. “All of this
equipment in the line that you see here is static equipment. You can get in them.”
I’m Austin Plumbtree, I’ve been with ODOT for a
little over two and a half years now. Four years ago, I was sitting in your
guys’ exact shoes. “When you push these back forward, it locks.” Since I do grow up
on a farm and ranch, I really enjoy working with equipment, so that’s why I
came today. “Very good! Easy huh?” My name’s Edwin
Martinez. It’s just a new learning experience in the career I wanted to
come into, construction or a diesel mechanic. “They’re the backbone of our
country right? The people right here, they build the roads, the building’s, the
bridges…” I believe that, you know, opportunities like this are huge for for
those kids that are ready to go to the workforce. I’m Cody Wheeler. I’ve
been a ODOT for 11 and a half years now.. “To the instrument, ten feet – and right.” I’m just trying to expose the kids to surveying in general, the technology
behind it. “That’s kind of what surveying is! You’re looking for treasures.” Expose
kids to as much as possible, and let them figure out where they want to go.
It was hard at first, and I dropped the first one. And then, the second one I got
onto the cone. “Do you like working for ODOT? Has it been good?
“There is just so much opportunity with this agency and you could be going from
ditching, to paving, to plowing snow. It’s absolutely amazing.” The excitement that
comes out of when somebody learns something new. It brings a smile to my
face. It’s a good time.
