Colorado baker on Supreme Court: Very Big win for religious freedom

THAT IS WHY A LOT OF FUND MANAGERS HAVE TO BUY IT, THAT IS WHY IT IS UP 4%.>>>IN COLORADO A BAKER REFUSED TO MAKE A CAKE FOR A SAME-SEX COUPLE IT WENT TO THE SUPREME COURT. JACK PHILLIPS IS HIS NAME. WE’RE JOINED ALSO BY LIST LAWYER, KRISTIN WAGNER. DO YOU REGARD THIS AS OUT AND OUT VICTORY FOR RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES.>>I THINK IS A BIG WIN FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. THE COMMISSION RULED EGREGIOUSLY AGAINST MY RIGHT TO PRACTICE MY FAITH. STUART: IT WAS A VERDICT AGAINST THE COLORADO CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION IN FACT? THE SUPREME COURT TOOK THAT COMMISSION TO TASK AS OPPOSED TO THE GAY COUPLE OR YOU, CORRECT?>>THEY RECOGNIZED THAT THE COMMISSION TREATED MY FAITH WITH DISREGARD, WITH DISRESPECT AND INTOLERANCE. STUART: I WILL GET YOU IN A SECOND, KRISTIN. I WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH ALL OF THIS? THIS CASE HAS EVOLVED OVER THE PAST YEAR AT LEAST I THINK. HOW HAVE YOU HELD UP?>>THIS CASE IS SIX YEARS OLD. STUART: SIX YEARS OLD? I’M SORRY.>>KNOWING THAT I SERVE EVERYBODY WHO COMES IN MY SHOCK IS GOOD PAUSE I SERVE EVERYBODY. I JUST DON’T CREATE CAKES WITH EVERY MESSAGE THAT PEOPLE ASK ME TO CREATE. SO CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION FORCED ME TO START CREATING CAKES FOR SAME SEX WEDDINGS, I WILL SERVE THE TWO MEN THAT CAME IN MY SHOP. STUART: WHAT OTHER MESSAGES WOULD YOU REFUSE TO PUT ON A CAKE?>>NOT JUST REFUSE TO PUT ON A CAKE OR CAKE IN GENERAL. I DON’T CREATE CAKES FOR HALLOWEEN. I WOULDN’T CREATE CAKES THAT WOULD BE ANTI-AMERICAN OR WOULD BE DISPARAGING AGAINST OTHER PEOPLE. DENIGRATE OTHER PEOPLE OR EVEN DESMARRIAGE PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFY AS LGBT. IT IS THE MESSAGE OF THE CAKE. IT IS NEVER THE PEOPLE WHO ORDER THE CAKE. STUART: KRISTIN, YOU’RE THE GENTLEMAN’S LAWYER HERE. DOES THIS CASE AND THE SUPREME COURT RULING OPEN UP AS A PRECEDENT THAT OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS COULD SAY, NO, I’M NOT SELLING MY PRODUCT TO YOU FOR WHATEVER REASON? DOES IT OPEN IT UP LIKE THAT?>>NO, IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT. THE SUPREME COURT FOUND THAT JACK SERVES EVERYONE WHO COMES INTO HIS STORE BUT THAT HE CAN’T PROMOTE ALL MESSAGES. THAT IS A CRITICAL DISTINCTION NEEDS TO BE MADE. WHEN WE’RE DEALING IN AREAS INVOLVING RELIGIOUS HOSTILITY BY THE GOVERNMENT THE COURT SAID IN 7-2 RULING YESTERDAY, RELIGIOUS HOSTILITY IN A GOVERNMENT HAS NO PLACE IN PLURALISTIC SOCIETY. THAT HOSTILITY WAS SO OBVIOUS IN THIS CASE IT RULED IN JACK’S FAVOR. STUART: THIS HOSTILITY, TELL ME, THERE WERE NASTY WORDS USED ABOUT JACK, IS THAT CORRECT?>>YES. THERE WASN’T JUST NASTY WORDS, OWNERS BUT THEY ACTUALLY SAID AND RULED IN THREE OTHER CASES THAT CAKE DESIGNERS WHO DIDN’T WANT TO CRITICIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE WITH RELIGIOUS MESSAGES HAD FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS BUT JACK DID NOT BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT DISAGREED WITH HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS ON MARRIAGE. STUART: WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE, JACK?>>HOPEFULLY WE GO BACK TO THE MAKING WEDDING CAKES, 25 YEARS AGO TO DO THE WEDDING ART THAT I LOVE. STUART: I UNDERSTAND YOUR WIFE HAS HAD TROUBLE GOING TO THE BAKERY BECAUSE OF TROUBLE SURROUNDING IT.>>IT HAS BEEN VERY HARD TIME LAST SIX YEARS. WE HAD DEATH THREATS. HUNCH THOUSANDS OF HATEFUL EMAILS AND HATEFUL PHONE CALLS. SHE WAS AT A POINT AFRAID TO COME TO THE SHOP BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. STUART: IS IT JUST GAY MARRIAGE THAT YOU OBJECT TO?>>NOT, NOT AT ALL. THERE ARE DOZENS, I GAVE YOU EXAMPLES OF OTHER CAKES AND MESSAGES THAT I DON’T CREATE. I SERVE EVERYBODY WHO COMES IN THE SHOT, GAYS, CATHOLICS, MUSLIMS, ANYBODY. STUART: BUT IT IS GAY MARRIAGE THAT YOU OBJECTED TO IN THIS CASE?>>IN THIS CASE I OBJECT TO BEING FORCED TO PARTICIPATE IN A MARRIAGE THAT REPRESENTS A VIEW OF MARRIAGE THAT GOES DIRECTLY AGAINST MY CORE FAITH.>>IT IS THE MESSAGE. STUART: THE SAME COUPLE, ANOTHER GAY COUPLE TURNED UP IN YOUR BAKERY AGAIN, NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY WAS FORCING YOU TO MAKE A CAKE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, WOULD YOU DO IT?>>I WOULD SERVE THEM. I TOLD THESE TWO GENTLEMEN. SELL YOU COOKIES, BROWNIES, MAKE YOU BIRTHDAY CAKES, MAKE YOU CUSTOM CAKES, THIS IS JUST, MESSAGE OF THIS CAKE IS ONE THAT I CAN’T CREATE. STUART: DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENT HERE WAS PICKED ON?>>OH, ABSOLUTELY. HE WAS TARGETED BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT IF WE WANT FREEDOM FOR OURSELF, THEN WE HAVE TO EXTEND IT TO OTHER PEOPLE. POLITICAL OPINIONS MAY SHIFT, CULTURE MAY SHIFT, IN CERTAIN WAYS AT CERTAIN TIMES BUT THE FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTIONS SHOULD APPLY TO ALL OF US, REGARDLESS OF OUR BELIEFS ON MARRIAGE. STUART: JACK, IS THERE A PARTICULAR, NOT A PARTICULAR CHURCH BUT A DENOMINATION WITHIN CHRISTIANITY YOU BELONG TO?>>NOT REALLY. I GUESS, EVANGELICAL WOULD BE AN APPROPRIATE TERM. COVER AS PRETTY WIDE SWATH. I’M A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST. STUART: OKAY. LOOK IT, IT WAS A PLEASURE HAVING YOU ON THE PROGRAM. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR APPEARING. I’M SURE YOU MUST BE UTTERLY EXHAUSTED.

  • I can't believe this went this far,the Baker has every right not to make a cake for someone if he doesn't want to.Damn SJWer's.

  • LMAO at the hypocrisy in America! Christians in America cry like babies if the feel they are being discriminated against but use they religious beliefs to discriminate against others! That's HYPOCRISY at it's finest! PATHETIC, he's in business to make cakes, therefore make the fucking cake, it's not as if he was invited to the wedding!

  • This has nothing to do with religious freedom. The only reason the bible banging piece of christian trash won was a concession because "supposedly" the ACLU didn't respect the pig enough. The ACLU did their job, protecting people from ignorant jesus freaks who vomit their pig religion onto others. The baker pig runs a PUBLIC business and it's his job to serve the public, ALL of the public. If he ran a religious business, maybe, but a public business has to sell to all of the public. This sets a horrible precedent for christian pigs to further discriminate against gays because of their filthy, hateful pig-god. Did the Colorado pig deny services to adulterers, murderers, child molesters, liars, and all the others his hate book decries? NO. He did as all bible banging trash do, picked the part of his hate book that backs up his personal prejudice. If jesus freak trash REALLY followed their filthy hateful pig-god, there'd be no christian soldiers – thou shalt not kill; they'd hate Pig Trump – thou shalt not lie, and a host of others. They're all just a bunch of phony-baloney pigs, childishly using their magic fantasy man to take responsibility for their ignorance and bigotry. Hypochristians all.

  • Some people believe do on to other's as you would like done to you. So Religious Christans should be Refused service as well. The supreme court would have to be ok with this If for Faith. This is example of christans deviding the world. They will never evolve. Just look at history christans where the cause of murders. And stoled other's beliefs to change around as there own. Now that's corruption.

  • what about a compromise……..?by court order, the baker will make a cake with 2 small figures on top buggering each other.

  • It really wasn’t a big win for freedom of religion. If you read the ruling its super vague. It essentially says (in the most simplistic form) the baker won, because the colorado civil rights commission was “mean” to him for having his religious convictions. It basically says if you are nice to the baker after being “discriminated” you have a case. It leaves the door open.

  • you can not FORCE an artiest to create
Though Michell Angelo was a sculptor ,and the church threatened him with excommunication if he did not paint the Sis teen chapel.

  • The Supremes told the left how to WIN. The issue was the unfair treatment by the Colorado Civil Rights Commision. The Supremes Tod the left that their bias must be hidden. The next case will go to the gays unfortunately.

  • Seems like a decent dude, too bad his old book told him two guys can’t get married… and women suspected of adultery should drink dirty water!

  • If the gay couple wanted a wedding cake they could have went home to their bedroom and made a fudge cake….

  • "Very Big win for religious freedom." Uhm… no. This is a victory for only for Phillips and only as it applies to one transaction six years ago.

The Supreme Court left Colorado's anti-discrimination law fully intact and even said it's the state's right to prohibit discrimination against LGBT individuals in public accommodation. In fact, in writing for the majority, Justice Kennedy appeared to go out of his way to say that states should protect their LGBT citizens from discrimination and preserve their "dignity," (a favorite term for Kennedy). The Court provided a very narrow ruling only to say the commission didn't give Phillips a fair hearing because they had previously ruled in favor of bakers who refused to decorate cakes with hateful messages but ruled against a baker who refused to decorate a cake with a loving message he didn't agree with.

SCOTUS didn't say Phillips has the right to discriminate based solely on his personal beliefs.

  • Fake ass conservatives. To be right wing is to be against big government. God's kingdom is the biggest government ever. Therefore, god is a fat libtard communist cunt that will be part of the swamp drained. Anyone who supports god is a commie loving faggot who needs to be deported for treason. TRUTH! Prove me wrong!

  • Why do Christians laugh at Muslims when they are all as crazy as each other? If you don't think it's right to marry another man then don't marry another man.  Religions are the root of all evil and retards progress.

  • This pair of a faggots should be happy that there are even allowed to get married legally. Now they want random people to do shit against their own will or they’ll take them to court for it? And before I forget, that’s what they get for not calling about the cake before they went in person.

  • There are so many other bakeries in Denver that would’ve baked a wedding cake for the gay couple. This lawsuit was filed solely to harass and intimidate the bakery owner into compliance with their demands.

  • The main goal of "the homosexual agenda" was to completely take away Christian religious freedom and force Christians to participate in a very personal way in "the homosexual lifestyle" or lose everything they had worked for in thier entire lives.
However our God has made sure that, that is not going to hapoen, ever, and our God has "returned to sender" the homosexual agenda back to hell where it came from.

  • It is not a big win for Christians – it simply allowed this man to go back to business after the Colorado Courts suspended his business license. The first time he discriminates against someone (and they are lining up to be the "one" believe me, he will lose his license again and end up in court for the next 4 years – out of business again basically.

  • The gay couple should go to a Muslim bakery and see if they will be up to make a cake like they wanted to! This Lgbt is all ways attacking the values of the straight family! Especially Christians families!

  • Thank you Mr anchorman for being so respectful in your interview, even wishing Mr Phillips well. Other interviews have tried to tear Mr Phillips apart so thank you again for not doing that.

  • #SupremeCourt 7 to 2 in favor of #JackPhillips and #ReligiousFreedom. The tide is turning!! Hallelujah!!!

  • He should have made the cake. We should go make him bake the cake he is restricting people to live their own lifestyles because of his convictions.

  • Please read Leviticus chapter 18 verse 22 and chapter 20 verse 13 to understand why this man didn't do the design for this couple

  • I feel bad for this baker. He offered to make those guys a custom cake, offered other baked goods, etc but he just could not make a wedding cake for them. He was even being nice about it. Those guys keep coming after him, instead of taking their business elsewhere (which is what they should of done). He did not refuse to give them business at all. They are just wanting to play the victim card and make the man miserable. This society is a fucking absolute mess.

  • Jack doesnt attend a church? I dont believe that. I wonder why he refused to say what church he attends.

  • it was a victory for the baker…but the court didnt go far enough. kennedy should of went further but he didnt…

  • But if he discriminates against another gay couple tomorrow, he will have to go through this whole ordeal again. It's not the big win everyone thinks it is.

  • How relevant is this 'religious freedom' fetish, when the god that it is based upon is just one more in a long line of fabricated, imaginary gods?

  • So the couple get discriminated against is approved because the civil liberties were dissrespectfull – the couple never targeted him thats a lie

  • This is not a big win. Kristen Waggoner is a liar. It's a narrow ruling. In this particular case, SCOTUS ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed bias against his religious beliefs – so he didn't receive a fair hearing – so SCOTUS invalidated the decision. SCOTUS didn't rule that bakeries (operating in jurisdiction that prohibits sexual orientation discrimination) that make wedding cakes can refuse service to gay couples.

Some gay couple will absolutely troll him if his bakery starts to make wedding cakes again – and will file another complaint. But the next time around, the CCRC will take care not to show any bias – they'll probably just recuse themselves.

  • This is actually a HUGE ruling. This story shines the light on how Liberals think. That you have to accept them or you are going to be sorry. The Supreme Court said that the Colorado Court acted hostile towards the baker. The Colorado Court acted with a bias towards the baker (hard to comprehend the Colorado Court had to be reprimanded like this). The gay couple could have been adult and realistic about it and just gone to another baker, BUT NO!!! They had to act hostile and sue the baker, and all the way to the Supreme Court… Such a vindictive act. The gay couple was so offended that they were going to make this simple baker "pay" for not accepting them for being gay that they decided to punish the baker for essentially having his own counter beliefs. This gay couple didn't care if the baker was offended. The Supreme Court stated that the gay couple needs to be tolerant of the bakers views and opinions and his religious beliefs as well. That tolerance is a two way street, Kapish??!!! The gay couple expected and demanded their opinions and beliefs to be accepted, respected, and tolerated yet they would not accept, respect, and tolerate the bakers religious beliefs. This is why people can't and don't want to get along with those with such extreme beliefs and behavior. Everyone needs to tolerate others even if the other person is a jerk, nasty, or wrong. True adults don't act so poorly which shows you, those that do, are not adult regardless of their age.

  • We’re judged by our works if we don’t judge ourselves now… during Noah’s time this and many other things were happening and a lifeboat was built… only 8 people were allowed on board and many many animals… why were so many animals admitted but not so many people?
Also, have you heard about what took place at Sodom and Gomorrah? Do you know why the cities of the plain were destroyed? You may want to look into that account for yourself. It also says “woe to those that call good evil and evil good”. What is good and what is evil or sin? It says that sin “is the transgression of the law”. That would be God’s laws/commandments. Good to look into those as well Exodus 20 is a good starting point. Also Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4, 5:16,17,18 then the rest of Matthew 5. Isaiah 42:21… all good sources.

  • Great win for Almighty God, Jesus Christ His son, and The Holy Spirit!!! We cannot condone homosexual acts and no laws can be written against religious beliefs!!!

  • colorado constitution of 1876 religious rights:

    Section 4. Religious freedom.

The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination, shall forever hereafter be guaranteed; and no person shall be denied any civil or political right, privilege or capacity, on account of his opinions concerning religion; but the liberty of conscience hereby secured shall not be construed to dispense with oaths or affirmations, excuse acts of licentiousness or justify practices inconsistent with the good order, peace or safety of the state. No person shall be required to attend or support any ministry or place of worship, religious sect or denomination against his consent. Nor shall any preference be given by law to any religious denomination or mode of worship

  • LGBTQ are creating fights and arguments and disturbing the peace with this sinful lifestyle, its one thing to sin and repent, it is another to sin and remain in it and coerce others to accept that sin as "normal" when Gods Word clearly says it is not. Keep your perversions private, you cant claim a right while violating my right to decency. Sorry against our religious beliefs!!! your so called "law" is invalid!!

  • What irritated me the most about this case is those two gay men later went to another cake shop to have their cake made and they could've just left it at that. But no, they had to go full-blown liberal SJW and make a scene only to end up losing their stupid asses at SCOTUS.
Jack Phillips seems like a really nice guy and they say "nice guys finish last." That may be true but one thing is for sure; nice guys definitely get the last laugh……Jack Phillips got the last laugh for sure! 🤣

  • Ok so I don't think that this guy should be forced to make a cake that he doesn't want to, but the precedent that this case will set bothers me. As always, Christians in this country will think it only applies to them. Lets be real, we all know that if a Muslim baker had denied an Easter themed cake to Christian, the Right would've gone absolutely insane.

  • Call a gay baker and insist he makes a cake with a cartoon drawing of Muhammed that is particularly offensive to Islam. Then make an anonymous call to a nearby mosque, inform the imam of what the gaker is doing and let some jihadis take care of business.

  • He is being sued a third time. Harassment at this point. Not a good look for the community suing. A bully is a bully

  • I will never understand why Alliance Defending Freedom didn't argue that the 13th Amendment quite clearly forbids "involuntary servitude"/ In other words: no one can be forced to labor for another. Period. No ambiguity there. And that's precisely what the plaintiffs are doing: attempting to force Mr. Phillips to create a product for them. I doubt any court would have touched the case were that the central issue. Just a thought.

  • I love that he said I’m a follower of Jesus Christ instead of promoting a denomination. The devil wants to separate us all.
