Charlie Baker, Jay Gonzalez spar in last debate before election

>>LIVE, WIT OUR PARTNERS, THI
IS A COMMITMENT 2018 SPECIAL,
THE MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR’S
DEBATE. NOW, TONIGHT’S MODERATORS. MARIA: GOOD EVENING, AND WELCO
TO THE FINAL DEBATE IN THE RAC
FOR GOVERNOR. BOB: ELECTION DAY IS TUESDAY,
AND TWO CANDIDATES ARE ON THE
BALLOT
INCUMBENT REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR
CHARLIE BAKER, RUNNING FOR HIS
SECOND TERM. AND CHALLENGER, DEMOCRAT JAY
GONZALEZ. WE APPRECIATE BOTH OF YOU BEING
HERE TONIGHT. MARIA: A PANEL OF THREE VETERAN
JOURNALISTS ARE ASKING THE
QUESTIONS. ADRIAN WALKER, COLUMNIST WIT
THE “BOSTON GLOBE.”
FROM WCVB’S “ON THE RECORD,”
JANET WU. AND WBUR’S SENIOR POLITICAL
REPORTER, ANTHONY BROOKS
SPANISH SECONDARY AUDIO BY THE
WAY IS AVAILABLE WITH TONIGHT’S
BROADCAST. THE CANDIDATES HAVE ONE MINUTE
TO RESPOND TO QUESTIONS AND 30
SECONDS FOR REBUTTALS. BOB: NOW WE BEGIN. A COIN TOSS DECIDED THE ORDER OF
OPENING AND CLOSING STATEMENTS. MR. GONZALEZ, YOU’RE FIRST AND
YOU HAVE ONE MINUTE. MR. GONZALEZ I’M RUNNING FOR
GOVERNOR BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT
PEOPLE AND I WANT TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES. AND I BELIEVE IN OUR POTENTIAL
TO DO SO. I AM THE SON OF A YOUNG
IMMIGRANT FROM SPAIN IN A MOTHER
WHO DROPPED OUT OF COLLEGE TO
TAKE CARE OF ME. THEY OVERCAME EXTRAORDINARY
CHALLENGES BY WORKING HARD,
BELIEVING IN THEMSELVES, AND
SUPPORTING EACH OTHER ALONG THE
WAY. THOSE VALUES I LEARNED FROM MY
PARENTS ARE OUR VALUES. AMERICAN VALUES. WE HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN THE
LITTLE GUY. WE HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED WE CAN
OVERCOME ANY CHALLENGE IF WE PUT
OUR MIND TO IT AND WORK FOR IT. AND THAT IS CERTAINLY TRUE RIGHT
HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS WHERE WE
HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A PROGRESSIVE
LEADER. I WANT US TO BE WHO WE ARE. TO AIM HIGH, TO TAKE ON THE BIG
CHALLENGE IS HOLDING WORKING
FAMILIES BACK IN THE STATE. TO STAND UP FOR EVERY SINGLE
PERSON AND TO MAKE MASSACHUSETTS
A LEADER AGAIN. I HAVE AN AMBITIOUS AGENDA TO DO
EXACTLY THAT. I WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR
WORKING FAMILIES IN THE STATE
AND I WILL STAND UP AGAINS
DONALD TRUMP’S HATEFUL AGENDA. GOV. BAKER GOOD EVENING AND LET
ME START BY THANKING THE MEDIA
CONSORTIUM AND I WANT TO THANK
THE VIEWING AUDIENCE AS WELL AS
THE PEOPLE IN MASSACHUSETTS F
GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE. THIS HAS BEEN THE OPPORTUNITY OF
A LIFETIME. MASSACHUSETTS IS HEADING IN THE
RIGHT DIRECTION. OUR ECONOMY BOOMING, OUR
SCHOOLS ARE GREAT, AND THE
COLLABORATIVE APPROACH FOR
LEADERSHIP THAT WE HAVE BROUGHT
HAS SOLVED PROBLEMS AND MADE
THINGS POSSIBLE IN COMMUNITIE ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH. THAT IS WHY SO MANY MAYORS AND
OTHER LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE
ENDORSING OUR REELECTION. WE HAVE ALSO FOUGHT THE OPEN
YOUR EPIDEMI INVESTED
OFFSHORE, AND FOR CLIMA
CHANGE, AND IN DOING SO CREATED
NATIONAL MODELS. WE INVESTED IN A SHATTERED
DEPARTMENT OF FAMILIES, AND
FOUND PERMANENT HOUSING FOR
15,000 FAMILIES SINCE WE TOO
OFFICE, PROVING GOVERNMENT CAN
GET IT DONE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT THE MOST. WE HAVE MUCH TO DO ON OPIOIDS,,
TRANSPORTATI HOUSING,,
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, YOU NAME
IT
I BELIEVE OUR APPROACH TO
WORKING TOGETHER CAN GET THINGS DONE.>>LET’S BEGIN. JANET: FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY
WERE CRIMINAL WAS USED IN
REFERENCE TO THE GAS EXPLOSIONS. THE U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE HAS
LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION. MORE THAN 5000 CUSTOMERS ARE
STILL SUFFERING WITHOUT HEAT AND
HOT WATER TONIGHT. MR. GONZAL, YOU HAVE BEEN
CRITICAL OF THE PACE, BUT IT IS
EASY TO CRITICIZE. I WHAT YOU TO GIVE US CONCRETE
EXAMPLES OF THINGS HE WOULD HAVE
DONE INSTEAD. MR. GONZALEZ: FIRST OF ALL IT IS
A TRAGEDY. I HAVE BEEN TO LAWRENCE THREE
TIMES THE LAST WEEK. PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY
THIS YOU DO NOT HAVE GAS SERVICE
IN THEIR HOMES, BUSINESSES THAT
ARE LOSING MONEY, AND THEIR
BUSINESSES ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE
OF THIS, IT IS A REAL TRAGEDY. IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED TO
BEGIN WITH. WE SHOULD HAVE HAD STRONGER
OVERSIGHT OF OUR GAS COMPANIES. I WOULD HIRE MANY MORE PEOPLE TO
OVERSEE OUR GAS COMPANIES AND
GAS INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE STATE
TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE. THE FACT THAT THIS HAS NOW BEEN
DELAYED FOR AN EXTRA MONTH IS A
REAL PROBLEM. THERE ARE GOING TO BE PEOPLE WHO
CANNOT BE IN THEIR HOMES DURING
THE COLD AND IT IS NOT OK. I THINK WE NEED MANY MORE
PEOPLE, OBVIOUSLY GETTING ALL
THESE HOUSES READY, AND WE
SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE
GAS COMPANY. IF FEELS LIKE WE TRUSTED THE GAS
COMPANY TO TAKE CARE OF THIS AND
I THINK THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO
TAKE CHARGE AND GET ON TOP OF IT
AND OWN IT AND MANAGE IT SO IT
IS BEING ADDRESSED LIKE THE EMERGENCY IT IS FOR THE PEOPLE
IN LAWRENCE. JANE GOVERNOR, HE SAYS YOU
HAVE BEEN TOO TRUSTING OF THE
GAS COMPANIES, THERE SHOULD HAVE
BEEN STRONGER OVERSIGHT. DO YOU TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY
FOR THIS? GOV. BAKER FIRST OF ALL WHAT IS
GOING ON THERE IS A TRAGEDY AND
IT IS ENORMOUSLY FRUSTRATING FOR
EERYONE INVOLVED. I HAVE BEEN UP THERE QUITE A BIT
MYSELF
WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE
EXPLOSIONS I SIGNED IN EMERGENCY
DECLARATION AND I TOOK OVER THE
PROCESS OF DOING THE IMMEDIATE RESTORATION PROJECT AND TOOK IT
AWAY FROM COLUMBIA. WE ALSO PUT TOGETHER IN
OVERSIGHT TEAM TO OVERSEE THE
WORK ASSOCIATED WITH REBUILDING
THE MAINLINE PIPE, DOING THE
SERVICE LINE WORK AND THE HOUSE
TO HOUSE WORK. MANY PEOPLE SAID WE WOULD NEVER
GET ANY OF THAT DONE BY NOVEMBER
19
THE GOOD NEWS IS THE MAINLINE
PIPE IS RE-LAID THE SERVICE
LINES ARE GOING TO GET DONE IN THE BIG CHALLENGE NOW IS THE
HOUSE TO HOUSE STUFF, WHICH IS
ENORMOUSLY COMPLICATED. BUT BY WORKING WITH THE FIRE
MARSHALS, FIRE CHIEF’S, AND A
WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE IN
THE INSPECTIONAL AND ELECTRICIAN
AND PLUMBER FIELD, WE ARE MAKING
PROGRESS AND WE ARE GOING TO HIT THAT SECOND DEADLINE. JANE SHOULD YOUR OVERSIGHT
HAVE BEEN STRONGER BEFORE THIS
HAPPENED? GOV. BAKER: THE NTSB IS DOING A
COPPER HAS A REVIEW. I SPOKE TO THEM AROUND 3:00 IN
THE MORNING LAWRENCE ON THE
NIGHT OF THE ORIGINAL EXPLOSIONS
AND SAID TO THEM WE WILL GIVE
THEM ANY HELP THEY NEED. WE ALSO SPENT TIME TALKING TO
TH ATTORNEY GENERAL WHO PUT A
REQUIREMENT IN THAT NO DOCUMENTS
ASSOCIATED WITH ANY OF THIS
COULD BE DESTROYED AND THEY ALL
HAD TO BE MAINTAINE WE PLAN TO HOLD ANYONE WHO NEEDS
TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE,
ACCOUNTABLE. ABSOLUTELY. MR. GONZALEZ THE BAD NEWS IS
FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE AFFECTED
AREA WILL NOT HAVE GAS SERVICE
FOR AN EXTRA MONTH NOW BECAUSE
NOT ENOUGH HAS BEEN DONE QUICKLY
ENOUGH. LET ME SAY THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH
OVERSIGHT BEFORE. THERE WERE TWO GAS INSPECTORS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WARNED
WEEKS BEFORE THE INCIDENT. FOR OVER 21,000 GAS PIPE
INFRASTRUCTURE. THIS IS THE SAME REPUBLICAN
PLAYBOOK OF SMALLER GOVERNMENT. GOVERNMENT DOES REALLY IMPORTANT
THINGS LIKE PROTECTING PEOPLE. WE NEED TO BE PROTECTING PEOPLE
FROM NATURAL GAS PIPELINE
EXPLOSIONS LIKE THIS. BO ANOTHER UTILITY QUESTION
NOW. ANTHONY: IN THE NATION GRID
LOCKOUT YOU HAVE MADE EFFORTS TO
BRING BOTH SIDES TOGETHER. FOUR MONTHS IN, WORKERS ARE
STILL OFF THE JOB. YOU SAY YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT
SAFETY ISSUES, SO WHAT IS YOUR
ADMINISTRATION DOING TO END THE
STANDOFF? GOV. BAKER: WE HAVE ENCOURAGED
BOTH SIDES TO COME TOGETHER AND
END IT. WE HAVE MEDIATED DISCUSSIONS
AMONG BOTH SIDES. WE HAVE PUT A MORATORIUM IN
PLACE THAT BASICALLY SAYS
BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF MANPOWER
AND LACK OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE
TO THE NATIONAL GRID BECAUSE OF
THE LOCKOUT THAT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I WOULD
DESCRIBE AS STATUTORY WORK AND
EMERGENCY SERVICE WORK. IT IS MY HOPE THAT THAT WIL
PROD NATIONAL GRI AND THE
STEELWORKERS TO COME TOGETHER
AND GET THIS DEAL DONE. THE ONE THING WE DID DO TO MAKE
SURE IT WAS POSSIBLE TO BRING
THOSE FOLKS UP TO THE MERRIMACK
VALLEY IS WE ENSURED ALL THE
PAPERWORK NEEDED TO BE DONE TO
MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THOS LOCKED OUT WORKERS TO WORK IN
THE MERRIMACK VALLEY AND GET
PAID TO DO SO WAS PUT IN PLACE. I THINK IT IS FAIR TO SAY THAT
EVERYBODY WANTS TO SEE THIS
LOCKOU END, AND I DO BELIEVE BY
HOLDING NATIONAL GRID’S FEET TO
THE FIRE IN RESPECT TO NOT
PERMITTING THEM TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN THEIR STATUTORY WORK
IN EMERGENCY REPAIRS, THAT IS
GOING TO MOVE THE DISCUSSION
FORWARD FOR THEM. ANTHONY: MR. GONZALEZ, WHAT IS
MISSING FROM HIS RESPONSE? WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE
DIFFERENT? MR. GONZALEZ I WOULD HAVE
INTERVENED IMMEDIATELY, MONTHS
AGO. THE WAY THE WORKERS ARE BEING
TREATED BY NATIONAL GRID IS
REPREHENSIBLE. THEY WERE LOCKED OUT OF THEIR
JOBS. NOT BEING PAID. HEALTH INSURANCE TAKEN AWAY FROM
THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES. PUT ASIDE THE SAFETY CONCERNS
WI THE WORK THE TEMPORARY
WORKERS ARE DOING. HUNDREDS O COMPLAINTS WERE
FILED WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF
PUBL UTILITIES WEEKS BEFORE
THE MERRIMACK VALLEY DISASTER
WITH NO RESPONSE. I WENT WITH TH WORKERS, THE
LOCKED OUT WORKERS TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF UTILITIES TO
EXPRESS CONCERN ABOUT THE SAFETY
OF VIOLATIONS. THEY HAD BEEN TREATED
REPREHENSIBLE HE AND THERE ARE
REAL CONSEQUENCES TO THIS. I WOULD HAVE INTERVENED
IMMEDIATELY. I WANT T SAY, I KNOW THE
EXECUTIVES OF THE GAS COMPANIES
AND OTHER UTILITIES ARE FILLING
GOVERNOR BAKER’S COFFERS. I AM IN THIS TO FIGHT FOR ALL
THE FAMILIES IN THE STATE, ALL
THE LITTLE GUYS LIKE THESE
WORKERS, AND THAT IS YOU I’M
GOING TO FIGHT FOR. ANTHONY: CAN YOU GIVE US A DRO
DEAD DATE OF WHEN YOU WANT A NEW
CONTRACT REACHED BETWEEN THE TWO
PARTIES AND WHEN YOU WANT THOSE
WORKERS BACK ON THE JOB? GOV. BAKER: I WOULD LIKE THEM
BACK ON THE JOB NOW. THE REASON W PUT CONSTRAINTS ON
THE WORK NATIONAL GRID WAS
ALLOWED TO DO WAS BECAUSE A,
WE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY
ISSUES. THE D ISSUED A LENGTHY MEMO TO
NATIONAL GRID ABOUT SAFETY
CONCERNS THEY HAD WITH RESPECT
TO THEIR WORK THAT THEY WERE
STILL WORKING — WAITING FOR. THE BEST WAY WE CAN BELIE THIS
TO PARTICIPATE IS ENSURE THEY
ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING THEY ARE
NOT QUALIFIED TO DO. THEY ARE WORKING SHORTHAND WHICH
IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOW. MR. GONZALEZ: ONE OTHER THING TO
ADD TO THIS. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE GOVERNOR AND MYSELF
ON ENERGY NEEDS, GENERALLY. HE SUPPORTS EXPANDING GAS
PIPELINE INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE
STATE. I STRONGLY OPPOSE IT. I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER
TO PREVENT THE EXPANSION OF
NATURAL GAS PIPELINE
INFRASTRUCTURE. WE DO NOT NEED IT. IT WILL FURTHER OUR DEPENDENCE
ON FOSSIL FUELS. HAVE WE HAVE BEEN REMINDED, IT
IS DANGEROUS. THIS IS A BIG DANGERS —
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US THAT A
THINK PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE OF. GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL I WANT
TO POINT OUT THAT OUR
ADMINISTRATION IS THE ONE THAT
CREATED A OFFSHORE WIND
INDUSTRY ON THE EAST COAST OF
THE UNITED STATES. THE PROCUREMENT WE DID WORKING
WITH OUR COLLEAGUES IN THE
LEGISLATURE TO PUT THAT AND
TOGETHER SHOCK EVERYONE WHEN
IT CAME OUT WITH THE PRICE
POINT. AS A RESULT, CONNECTICUT JUMPE
IN, RHODE ISLAND, NEW YORK,
VIRGINIA DELAWARE, EVERYWHERE
DOWN THE COAST. IF ASKED TO SWITCH TO REDUCE OUR
RELIANCE ON FOSSIL FUELS IS
CREATE AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVES
AND WE MOVED THAT BALL WAY DOWN
THE FIELD. BOB: RECEN GRADUATE STUDENT AT
UMAS BOSTON HAS THIS NEXT
QUESTION. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS T
GOVERNOR’S ROLE IN PREVENTING
HATE CRIMES LIKE THE MASS
KILLING’S AT THE PITTSBURGH
SYNAGOGUE? MR. GONZALEZ, YOU ARE UP ON
THIS. MR. GONZALEZ I THINK IT IS MORE
IMPORTANT THAN EVER THAT WE HAVE
PUBLIC LEADERS, INCLUDING
GOVERNOR, WHO IS SPEAKING OUT
FORCEFULLY AGAINST HATE CRIMES. THE TRAGEDY IN PITTSBURGH WAS A
DESPICABLE ACT O HATE AND
VIOLENCE. AND OUR PRESIDENT IS INCITING
IT. THIS KIND CONDUCT WITH HIS
HATEFUL AND DIVISIVE LANGUAGE. WE NEED PUBLIC LEADERS WILL
STAND UP FORCEFULLY AGAINST HIM. I WENT RECENTLY TO STAND WITH
MEMBERS OF READING WHERE THEY
RECENTLY FOUND TWO SWASTIKAS IN
THEIR HIGH SCHOOL. I WENT LAST WEEKEND TO A RALLY
WITH TRANSGENDER PEOPLE WHO WERE
RALLYING TO NOT ONLY PASS
QUESTION THREE, BUT AGAINST
HATE. WE A LIVING IN A REALLY
DIFFICULT TIME RIGHT NOW, AND WE
NEED PUBLIC LEADERS WHO ARE
BEING FORCEFUL AND STANDING UP
TO THE TYPES OF COMMENTS OUR
PRESIDENT MAKES. BOB: ARE YOU SAYING THAT
GOVERNOR BAKER HAS NOT STOOD UP? MR. GONZALEZ: I DON’T THINK HE
HAS DONE ENOUGH, NO, IN SPEAKING
OUT AGAINST OUR PRESIDENT. GOV. BAKER: LET ME START BY
SAYING ONE OF THE THINGS WE DID
ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO WHEN WE SAW
THE SPIKE IN HATE CRIMES IS WE
PUT A TASK FORCE TOGETHER. AND THAT TASK FORCE HAS MEMBERS
OF THE FAITH COMMUNITY, THE LAW
ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY, AND THE
EDUCATION COMMUNITY. THEY ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS
AROUND SHARING INTELLIGENCE,
AWARENESS, BEST PRACTICES AND
OTHER KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES TO
IMPROVE THE WAY WE ALL — DEAL
WITH THESE ISSUES. I THINK THAT IS THE MOST
IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED TO DO. CREATE A MECHANISM IN WHICH ALL
THE AFFECTED PLAYERS CAN
PARTICIPATE AND PREVENT THIS
SORT OF THING FROM HAPPENING TO
ENGAGE IN A DISCUSSION. THE SECOND THING YOU DO IS YOU
CONTINUE TO BUILD ON THE
BIPARTISAN EFFORTS THAT HAVE
BEEN PURSUED AROUND GUN CONTROL. WE WERE ONE OF THE FOR STATES IN
THE COUNTRY TO ELIMINATE BUMP
STOCKS AFTER THE HORRIBLE
TRAGEDY IN NEVADA. WE WERE ALSO ONE OF THE FEW
STATES IN THE COUNTRY TO PASS
EXTREME PROTECTION ORDER
LEGISLATION. MA TIMES, JOHN ROSENTHAL WAS
IN MY OFFICE TODAY TALKING ABOUT
THE WORK DONE HERE IN THE
COMMONWEALTH ON GUN CONTROL AND
THINGS WE CAN DO GOING FORWARD. I HAPPEN TO THINK THAT THE
THINGS WE DO THAT ARE EFFECTIVE
ARE EVERY BIT AS IMPORTANT AS
WHAT WE SAY. I HAVE STOOD UP AND SPOKEN OUT
AGAINST THE PRESIDENT ON
NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, BECAUSE HIS
LANGUAGE IN MEDICATIONS IS
DESTRUCTIVE AND APPALLING. MARIA: AND YOU DISAGREE WITH
THAT? MR. GONZALEZ I DO. I DO THINK IT MATTERS WHAT YOU
SAY AS GOVERNO
AND ALSO WHAT YOU DO. SOME OF THE GUN LEGISLATION, THE
COMMON SENSE GUN LAWS THAT WERE
PUT IN PLACE, HAPPENED IN SPITE
OF GOVERNOR BAKER, NOT BECAUSE
OF HIS LEADERSHI
GOVERNOR, YOU ARE SUPPORTING J MCMAHON, TO REPLACE HER AS
ATTORNEY GENERAL, WHO HAS SAID
HE BELIEVES THERE IS A GOD-GIVEN
RIGHT TO ASSAULT RIFLES. WHO RECENTLY SAID, IMMIGRANTS
ARE SAVAGES. TALK ABOUT HATE. WHY DU THINK HE WOULD BE A
BETTER ATTORNEY GENERAL? GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL, WITH
RESPECT TO MY POSITION ON
WHETHER I SUPPORTED OR
ENCOURAGED OR WATCHED FROM
BEHIND WITH RESPECT TO OUR GUN
LAWS, I WAS THE FIRST GOVERNOR IN THE COUNTRY TO TALK ABOUT THE
IMPORTANCE OF GETTING RID OF
BUMP STOCKS. I WORKED WITH COLLEAGUES ON
THAT LEGISLATION. I HAVE A D RATING FROM THE NRA. I WAS PROUD TO HAVE THE
ENDORSEMENT OF EVERY TOWN FOR
GUN SAFETY, WHICH IS WHERE TH
LARGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT
GUN-CONTROL ADVOCACY GROUPS IN
THE U.S MR. GONZALEZ: WHY DO YOU THINK
JIM MCMAHON WILL BE A BETTER
ATTORNEY GENERAL? GOV. BAKER: I WORKED CLOSELY
WITH HIM ON MANY ISSUES. WE HAVE HAD A GOOD WORKING
RELATIONSHIP. I SAID MONTHS AGO I WOULD
SUPPORT TH TICKET AND I AM
LIVING UP TO MY COMMITMENT ON
THAT. MR. GONZALEZ SO YOU BELIEVE HE
WOULD BE A BETTER ATTORNEY
GENERAL THAN HER? GOV. BAKER: I SAID I WAS GOING
TO SUPPORT THE TICKET. I HAVE WORKED CAREFULLY WITH THE
ATTORNEY GENERAL ON A VARIETY OF
ISSUES. MR. GONZALEZ: THIS IS IMPORTANT. BECAUSE THE GOVERNOR IS SAYING
HIS LOYALTY IS TO THE REPUBLICAN
PARTY, REGARDLESS OF THE
CONSEQUENCES. REGARDLESS OF HAVING SOMEONE WHO
IS GOING TO BE OUR ATTORNEY
GENERAL, TO A PLACE — OR TO
REPLACE ELIZABETH WARREN WHO IS
ANTI-CHOICE, ANTI-COMMON SENSE
GUN LAW ANTI A LOT OF WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE FOR. IF YOU ARE REALLY COMMITTED TO
COMMON SENSE GUN LAWS WOULD NOT
BE ASKING THE PEOPLE OF THE
STATE AND YOU WOULD PERSONALLY
NOT BE SUPPORTING TO PUT THEM IN
OFFICE. GOV. BAKER IT IS CLEAR WHERE I
STAND ON COMMON SENSE THOMAS. BY THE WAY, IT I NOT A RACE FOR
THOSE. IT IS A RACE FOR GOVERNOR. MR. GONZALEZ: THIS IS IMPORTANT. IT IS A RACE FOR GOVERNOR. I KNOW THAT. BUT YOU JUST PROVED MY POINT,
GOVERNOR
YOU DON’T THINK IT MATTERS. AND WE HAVE A PRESIDENT RIGHT
NOW WHO IS THREATENING OUR
VALUES, WHO IS TAKING THIS
COUNTRY BACKWARDS, WHO IS
THREATENING OUR DEMOCRACY. AND YOU ARE PUTTING LOYALTY TO
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ABOVE YOUR
COMMITMENT TO THESE VALUES. AND I THINK IT MATTERS, WHICH IS
WHY I AM RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR
AND NOT SOME OTHER — IN NOT
SOME OTHER PLACE. I THINK WE NEED A GOVERNOR WHO
WILL STAND UP AND BE CONSISTENT
ON THESE ISSUES. GOV. BAKER: I DID NOT VOTE FOR
DONALD TRUMP. I DON’T PLAN TO VOTE FOR HIM IF
HE RUNS FOR REELECTION
MOST PEOPLE KNOW WHERE I AM
COMING FROM WITH RESPECT TO THE
PRESIDENT. ON NUMEROUS ISSUES I WORKED
COLLABORATIVELY WITH DEMOCRATS
AND REPUBLICANS TO REPEL AND
APPEAL AND WORK AGAINST A SERIES
OF HIS INITIATIVES. AND IN MANY CASES WE HAVE BEEN
SUCCESSFUL. IN SOME RESPECTS O ABILITY TO
SUCCEED AND BE EFFECTIVE REALLY
MAKES A DIFFERENCE FOR PEOPLE
HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS. MARIA: THIS IS BASICALLY STILL
ON-TOPIC. ADRIAN: GOVERNOR BAKER, YOU SAID
YOU WOULD VOTE FOR GEOFF DIEHL
WHO SAID HE WOULD HAVE TRUMP’S
BACK IN WASHINGTON. HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT HIM? GOV. BAKER: LET’S START WITH THE
AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. THAT IS ONE WHERE I PUT TOGETHER
A COALITION AND WORKED WITH MY
COLLEAGUES A OTHER MEMBERS OF
THE HOUSE AND SENATE, DEMOCRATS
AND REPUBLICANS, TO SUCCE IN
PREVENTING MASSACHUSETTS FROM LOSING $1 BILLION IN FEDERAL
REVENUE IF THE AFFORDABLE CARE
ACT HAD BEEN REVEALED. WE DID SIMILAR THINGS WITH THE
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH. PART OF A BIG COALITION THAT
ALSO INVOLVED SENATOR WARREN,
WHERE WE WENT FROM A CUT IN
FUNDING TO AN INCREASE, WHICH
HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS, WITH ALL
THE MONEY AND EFFORT WE PUT IN, IT REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE. TIME AND TIME AGAIN ON
IMMIGRATION, DAC TP AND A
WHOLE SERIES OFS ISSUES I WORKED
COLLABORATIVELY WITH MY
COLLEAGUES TO PUSH BACK AGAINST
PRESIDENTIAL POLICIES I DO NOT SUPPORT. THAT SAID, I SAID AT THE
BEGINNING OF THE CAMPAIGN MONTHS
AGO I WOULD SUPPORT THE TICKET
AND I PLAN TO HONOR MY WORD ON
THAT. ADRIAN TO BE CLEAR ARE YOU
ASKING ALL YOUR SUPPORTERS
INCLUDING DEMOCRATS AND
INDEPENDENTS TO VOTE FOR HIM AS
WELL? GOV. BAKER: I AM SAYING I AM
SUPPORTING THE TICKET. HE HAS TO RUN HIS RACE, WE HAVE
TO DO HOURS. MR. GONZALEZ: JUST TO BE CLEAR,
WHEN GOVERNOR BAKER SAYS HE IS
SUPPORTING THE TICKET, HE DOES
NOT USE THIS WORD BUT HE IS
SUPPORTING THE REPUBLICAN
TICKET. BEST I CAN TELL FROM HIS
ANSWERS, HE IS BLINDLY
SUPPORTING THE REPUBLICAN TICKET
NO MATTER WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES. NO MATTER THAT WE WOULD BE
SENDING THE COCHAIR OF DONALD
TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN TO THE U.S. SENATE WHO WOULD DO EVERYTHING
IN HIS POWER TO UNDO WOMEN’S
RIGHTS TO CHOOSE AND SUPPORT THE
NRA’S AGENDA AND UNDO LGBTQ
WRITES. IT WOULD BE A RUBBER STAMP FOR
DONALD TRUMP’S AGENDA. TO PUT SOMEONE IN WHO BELIEVES
THERE IS A GOD-GIVEN RIGHT TO
ASSAULT WEAPONS AND DESCRIBES
IMMIGRANTS AS SAVAGES, YOU
CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAY
AND I WILL BE A GOVERNOR WH STANDS FOR A WOMEN’S RIGHT TO
CHOOSE AND LGBTQ WRITES AND
COMMON SENSE GUN LAWS, NOT JUST
SOME OF THE TIME, BUT ALL THE
TIME. GOV. BAKER I HAVE SUPPORTED
WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS MY
ENTIRE POLITICAL CAREER IN A
TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE FACT
THAT PLANNED PARENTHOOD STAYED
NEUTRAL BECAUSE THEY APPRECIATE A LOT OF THE WORK WE HAVE DON
TO PROTECT WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE
RIGHTS IN MASSACHUSETTS. I SIGNED THE TRANSGEND
LEGISLATION ON SUPPORTING
QUESTION THREE. I HAVE DONATED TO THE CAMPAIGN
MYSELF. I HAVE A LONG TRACK RECORD ON
THIS ISSUES. PEOPLE IN MASSACHUSETTS
UNDERSTAND THAT. IT IS WELL THE REASONS WE HAVE
GOT THE ENDORSEMENT OF SOME OF
THE LONGEST — LARGEST GUN
CONTROL ORGANIZATIONS THE
COUNTRY. THEY BELIEVE WE HAVE BEEN DOIN
THE THINGS THAT MATTER AND ARE
MOST IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE. BOB: JANET HAS THE NEXT
QUESTION. JANE YOU — WITH ALL THE
STORIES OF SURFACING NOW ABOUT
SEXUAL HARASSMENT FROM YEARS
PAST, IS THERE ANY INCIDENTS IN
THE WORKPLACE WHEN YOU REACH
BACK INTO YOUR MEMORY BANK THAT YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE
CONFRONTED DIFFERENTLY? MR. GONZALEZ: NO, THERE IS NOT. I HAVE NEVER BEEN CONFRONTED I
A LEADERSHIP POSITION WITH A
SITUATION WHERE SOMEBODY HAS
SAID THEY HAVE BEEN HARASSED OR
TREATED IN A WAY THAT IS
INAPPROPRIATE. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM, THOUG
THE ME TOO MOVEMENT HAS SHOWN US
THAT THIS IS A SICKNESS IN OUR
CULTURE AND WE HAVE BEEN
TOLERATING THE INTOLERABLE FOR
AND WE NEED TO STAND UP AGAINST IT. ONE OF THE THINGS I HAVE SAID I
WOULD DO AND HAVE BEEN VERY
CLEA ABOUT IS I THINK THE
LICENSE FOR THE WINNING CASINO
SHOULD BE REVOKED. — WYNN CASINO SHOULD BE
REVOKED. THE COMPANY KNEW ABOUT STEVE
SYNN – WYNN’S CONDUCT AND DID
NOTHING ABOUT IT. THEY ARE NOT SUITABLE, THE
COMPANY, TO HOLD A LICENSE IN
MASSACHUSETTS. WE NEED TO HOLD NOT ONLY THE
PEOPLE WHO ENGAGE IN THIS
CONDUCT ACCOUNTABLE WE NEED TO
HOLD THE INSTITUTION TO ENABLE
IT ACCOUNTABLE, AND I WILL DO
THAT AS GOVERNOR. JANET: WHAT ABOUT YOU, GOVERNOR? GOV. BAKER ANY LEADERSHIP ROLE
I HAVE EVER HAD WE HAD HAD A
ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY. WE ARE THOSE MADE SURE THAT
PEOPLE KNEW BOTH DURING MY TIME
IN STATE GOVERNMENT AND IN THE
PRIVATE SECTOR WHO THEY CAN
REACH OUT TO AND TALK TO IF THEY
WANTED TO RAISE A CONCERN. EITHER A 1-800 NUMBE
ANONYMOUSLY OR THE NAMES OF
SPECIFIC PEOPLE. IF ANYBODY RAISED ANY
ALLEGATIONS OR ISSUES WITH
RESPECT TO THAT, WE IMMEDIATELY
INVESTIGATED THEM AND DEALT WITH
THEM ACCORDINGLY. IN SOME CASES IF WE HAD TO G
OUTSIDE TO GET INDEPENDENT
INVESTIGATORS, WE DID THAT AS
WELL. THE BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT
THING YOU CAN DO IS MAKE CLEAR
YOU HAVE A ZERO-TOLERANCE POLIC
AND IF PEOPLE DO COME FORWARD,,
DEAL WITH THEM QUICKLY AND
APPROPRIATELY AND ENSURE THERE IS DISCRETION AND PROTECTION FOR
THE PEOPLE WHO COME FORWARD. MARIA: WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON
TO THE SPEED ROUND PART OF OUR
DEBATE
SHORT QUESTIONS AND YES, WE ARE
LOOKING FOR STORE ANSWERS. MOSTLY YES OR NO IF YOU WOULD BE
SO KIND. ONCE RECREATIONAL POT SHOPS
OPEN, WOULD YOU BE OK WITH
HAVING MARIJUANA IN YOUR HOUSE? MR. GONZALEZ: NO. GOV. BAKER I AM WITH MY
OPPONENT ON THIS ONE. MARIA: LET’S SEE WHAT HAPPENS
WITH THE NEXT QUESTION. BOSTON HOTEL WORKERS ARE
STRIKING. DO YOU SIDE WITH THE EMPLOYEES
WERE THE BUSINESSES? GOV. BAKER I AM A BIG FAN OF
UNITE LOCAL. WE ACTUALLY MOV OUR ELECTION
NIGHT ACTIVITIES OUT OF ONE OF
THE HOTELS THEY WERE STRIKING IN
FRONT OF. WE ARE WITH THE EMPLOYEES. MR. GONZALEZ: I HAVE PICKETED
WITH THE EMPLOYEES FIVE TIMES
BECAUSE I STAND WITH THEM. AS GOVERNOR I WILL STAND WITH
WORKING PEOPLE LIKE THEM. MARIA: GOVERNOR BAKER DOES NOT
ACCEPT A $65,000 HOUSING
ALLOWANCE, REJECTED A PAY RAISE. IF YOU ARE ELECTED AS GOVERNOR,
WOULD YOU ALSO REJECT THEM? MR. GONZALEZ I HAVE BEEN CLEAR
THAT I WILL TAKE WHATEVER THE
SALARY AND COMPENSATION I
I’M NOT GOING TO SEEK ANYTHING
DIFFERENT. GOV. BAKER: LOOK, I OPPOSE IT
BECAUSE I HATED THE PROCESS THE
LEGISLATURE WENT THROUGH TO
DELIVER IT AND I DIDN’T THINK
THE COMMONWEALTH WAS IN
POSITION TO DEAL WITH IT. BUT NOW IT IS A STATUTORY
REQUIREMENT. THAT IS WHAT IT IS AND IF I GET
A SECOND TERM I WILL JUST TAKE
IT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IT IS. MARIA: THE IDEA OF BUILDING A
SEAWALL AROUND BOSTON, DO YOU
SUPPORT THAT? GOV. BAKER I READ A STUDY THAT
WAS COMPREHENSIVE AND EFFECTIVE
ON THIS ISSUE. MARIA: YES OR NO. GOV. BAKER: LET ME FINISH. HE SAID HE WOULD GIVE US A
LITTLE ROOM. MR. GONZALEZ: A LITTLE —
MARIA: A LITTLE. GOV. BAKER WE HAVE A PLANNING
PROGRAM IN PLACE FOR ALL THE
CITIES AND TOWNS DOING
VULNERABILITY PLANNING INCLUDING
BOSTON. A LOT OF THE BOSTON HAS TALKED
ABOUT CAME OUT OF THE PROCESS. THIS IS A NORMA’S ISSUE WHICH
PUT AT THE TOP OF THE PILE WITH
RESPECT TO THINGS WE NEED TO
WORK ON. MR. GONZALEZ I DON’T KNOW ABOUT
THE SEAWALL, BUT WE NEED TO
EVERYTHING WE POSSIBLY CAN AS
URGENTLY AS POSSIBL TO PROTECT
OUR PROPERTY AND PEOPLE FROM
CLIMATE CHANGE. MARI LET’S TRY TO KEEP THIS TO
YES OR NO. DO YOU AGREE WITH A RAILING
BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH STATION? MR. GONZALEZ: YES. GOV. BAKER I SUPPORT DOING
WHATEVER PROVIDES THE BEST
OPPORTUNITY TO GET PEOPLE FROM
WHERE THEY ARE TO WHERE THEY ARE
TRYING TO GO. WE DID A BIG STUDY ON THIS THAT
SUGGESTED THE PRICE T WAS
BETWEEN $15 BILLION AND $20
BILLION. THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO SOLVE
THIS PROBLEM —
MARIA: YES OR NO? GOV. BAKER IT IS IMPORTANT TO
SOLVE THE PROBLEM I JUST DON’T
KNOW IF THAT IS HOW I WOULD
SOLVE IT. BOB: LET’S TALK ABOUT TRAFFIC. ADRIAN WALKER HAS A QUESTION. ADRIAN: TRAFFIC IS GETTING WORSE
EVERY YEAR. AAA SAYS WE HAS THE — WE HAVE
THE FIFTH-LARGEST COMMUTE IN THE
COUNTRY. SHOULD WE EXPAND TOLLS OR DO YOU
HAVE OTHER IDEAS FOR CUTTING
TRAFFIC? GOV. BAKER: WE NEED TO FOLLOW
THROUGH ON THE $8 BILLION PLAN
BEHALF OF THE MBTA. THAT WILL INCREASE T CAPACITY
AND THE SYSTEM ON THE BOARDS
LINE AND RED LINE BY ABOUT 50%
AND 15% ON THE GREEN LINE AND
SIGNIFICANTL INCREASE OUR
ABILITY TO EXPAND COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE AS WELL. IF YOU CAN’T GIVE PEOPLE A
RELIABLE, DEPENDABLE
ALTERNATIVE, THE LIKELIHOOD YOU
GET THEM OFF THE ROAD WILL BE
DRAMATICALLY LIMITED. FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE WORK
THE FISCAL CONTROL BOARD AND OUR
ADMINISTRATION HAS DONE, SETTI
THEM UP TO BE IN THE POSITION
WHERE IT THEY CAN MAKE —
IN A SYSTEM WHERE EVERYTHING IS MORE THAN 50 YEARS OLD, I THINK
IT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO GO. IF WE REALLY WANT TO GET PEOPLE
OFF THE ROADS YOU HAVE TO MAKE
SURE YOU’RE MAKING THOSE
INVESTMENTS IN PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION. WE HAVE ADDED 225,0 JOBS OVER
THE COURSE OF OUR PAST FOUR
YEARS AND THAT HAS CERTAINLY HAD
SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE TRAFFIC
AS WELL. ADRIAN: MR. GONZALEZ, SAME
QUESTION. MR. GONZALEZ I WOULD BE OPEN TO
VARIABLE-RATE TOLLING, WHICH THE
GOVERNOR POST. WE ABSOLUTELY NEED TO FIX OUR
PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM AND THE
GOVERNOR IS NOT DOING NEARLY
ENOUGH. HE HAS TAKEN A STATUS QUO
APPROACH, REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE
WE NEED ADDITIONAL REVENUE TO
FIX OUR TRANSIT SYSTEM. NOT JUST THE MBTA REGIONAL BUS
SERVICE ACROSS THE STATE, WHICH
HE KEEPS TRYING TO CUT FUNDING
FOR. THE GOVERNOR’S PLAN IS T T
WILL BE IN GOOD REPAIR AND 15
YEAR AND IT TURNS OUT THAT IS
NOT EVEN HIS PLAN BASED ON A
FILING WITH THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT. HE DOES NOT HAVE A WAY TO FUND
THAT. MORE LIKE 25 YEARS. 15 YEARS IS RIDICULOUS. I WILL HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY
AROUND THIS. I HAVE A PLAN RAISE $3
BILLION FROM THE WEALTHY, TO
INVEST INTEREST ROTATION AND
EDUCATION. I HAVE BEEN OPEN AND HONEST THAT
WE NEED TO D THIS AND TREAT IT
WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY, TO GET
THIS DONE. WE ARE FEELING THE PEOPLE OF
MASSACHUSETTS. MARIA: THIS IS A PERFECT SEGUE
FOR OUR NEXT QUESTION. ANTHONY: MR. GONZALEZ, AS YOU
MENTIONED YOU PROPOSE THESE BIG
INVESTMENTS IN TRANSPORTATION. TO PAY FOR THEM YOU WANT HIGHE
TAXES ON THE WEALTHY, TAX ON
PRIVATE COLLEGE ENDOWMENTS. LEADERS OF YOUR OWN PARTY HAS
SHOWN VERY LITTLE APPETITE FOR
THESE KINDS OF TAX HIKES. DOESN’T THAT RESISTANC IN YOUR
PLANS TO IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION? MR. GONZALEZ I AM NOT AWARE OF
ANY LEADERS OF OUR PARTY WHO
SAID THEY ARE OPPSED TO IT. THE LEGISLATOR VOTED TWICE TO
PUT THE MILLIONAIRES TAX ON THE
BALLOT. THE ENDOWMENT TAX I PROPOSED ON
THE WEALTHIEST UNIVERSITIES IN
THE STATE IS A FAIR PROPOSAL
THAT WOULD RAISE $1 BILLION A
YEAR FOR EDUCATION AND
TRANSPORTATION AND I BELIEVE THE UNIVERSITIES
CAN AFFORD IT, AND IT WOULD MAKE
A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR WORKING
FAMILIES ACROSS THE STATE WHO
ARE MY TOP PRIORITY. LOOK, WE ARE FAILING WORKING
PEOPLE. WE HAVE ONE OF THE WORST
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN THE
COUNTRY. OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS FAILING
TO MANY OF OUR YOUNG KIDS. WE HAVE TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT
THIS. I AM NOT RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR TO
MANAGE THE STATUS QUO. I’M RUNNING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
FOR PEOPLE. I WILL BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT WE
NEED TO DO AND I WILL DELIVER ON
IT. ANTHON DO YOU THINK YOU COULD
GET SPEAKER DELEO TO AGREE TO
THIS PLAN? MR. GONZALEZ: I THINK WE CAN GET
THE LEGISLATURE. I HAVE A TRACK RECORD OF WORKING
SUCCESSFULLY WITH THE
LEGISLATURE ON BIG INITIATIVES. I THINK THE LEGISLATURE BASED ON
CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE
UNDERSTAND WE NEED TO INVEST IN
THIS. THIS IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
GOVERNOR BAKER AND MYSELF. I HAVE A SPECIFIC PROPOSAL. I WILL BE OPEN IF PEOPLE HAVE
BETTER IDEAS AS LONG AS IT IS
RAISING TAXES ON THE WEALTHY AND
NOT WEALTHY — NOT WORKING
PEOPLE. GOVERNOR BAKER’S PLAN IS ZERO. THAT WILL NOT GET US TO WHERE WE
NEED TO BE. ANTHONY: GOVERNOR BAKER, AS HAS
BEEN MENTIONED, YOU HAVE
INCREASED INVESTMENTS IN
MAINTENANCE AND REFORMED FISCAL
MANAGEMENT OF THE T. BUT THIS WILL TAKE AT LEAST 15
YEARS TO UPGRADE A LOT OF THE
T’S AGING INFRASTRUCTURE. CAN YOU TELL FRUSTRATE RIDERS
TONIGHT WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FIX
THE T SOONER? GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL, WE
STARTED WITH SYSTEM WITH A 25
YEAR REPAIR BACKLOG WHEN WE TOOK
OFFICE BECAUSE AMONG OTHER
THINGS WHEN MY OPPONENT WAS
RUNNING THE BUDGET OFFICE THEY LEFT $1.5 BILLION UNSPENT AND
THE REPAIR BACKLOG DOUBLED. THE FACT THE BACKLOG IS NOW DOWN
TO 15 YEARS IS A RESULT OF THE
FACT THAT OVER THE LAST FEW
YEARS WE SPENT MORE ON THE STATE
OF GOOD REPAIR THAN ANY TWO-YEAR
PERIOD IN RECENT HISTORY. THE STUFF PEOPLE REALLY CARE
ABOUT, THE EXPANSION OF THE
ORANGE LINE AND RED LINE, AND
THE INVESTMENT IN THE GRE
LINE, THAT STUFF IS COMING IN
THE NEXT 12 TO 24 MONTHS. THE SIGNAL PROJECTS, THE SYSTEM
PROJECTS, THE POWE SYSTEMS,
THAT IS ALL COMING IN THE NEXT
24 MONTHS, TOO. IT IS LITERALLY REPLACING
EVERYTHING. EVERY STATION, EVERY TRACK,
EVERY THIRD RAIL, EVERYTHING. THAT STUFF WILL EVENTUALLY
HAPPEN. THE BOTTOM LINE IS PEOPLE WILL
SEE REAL IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE
NEXT COUPLE YEARS. MR. GONZALEZ: IN015, THE
GOVERNOR SAID THAT H
PERFORMANCE SHOULD BE MEASURED
BASED ON THE RELIABILITY AND
DEPENDABILITY OF THE MBTA. SO HOW ABOUT THIS. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR COMMUTE
IS BETTER NOW THAN IT WAS FOUR
YEARS AGO, THEN YOU SHOULD VOTE
FOR CHARLIE BAKER. WHAT IF YOU WANT SOMEONE WHO
WILL ACTUALLY TAKE THIS ON AND
BE HONEST ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE
NEED TO INVEST MOR AND IS GOING
TO WORK WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY
TO FIX IT, THEN I AM YOUR GUY. GOV. BAKER: CAN I JUST SAY THAT
FOR QUITE A WHILE I HAVE BEE
HEARING MY OPPONENT TALK ABOUT
THE BIG INVESTMENTS HE WANTS TO
MAKE IN THE T
HE HAS NO CAPACITY TO PAY FOR THOSE. IT IS SO DISHONEST TO SAY TO THE
PEOPLE THAT HE CAN FUND THE
NORTH-SOUTH RAILING, EAST-WEST. MARIA: HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY
FOR IT? GOV. BAKER: — THESE ARE TENS OF
BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A PROJECTS
FOR WHICH HE IS OFFERING PLANS,
MANY OF WHICH DO NOT START UNTIL
FOUR YEARS FROM NOW TO GENERATE
REVENUE. ANDY BILLION DOLLARS THAT YOU
POINT OUT MAY NOT EVER COME TO
POINT OUT. WE TALKING ABOUT SPENDING $8
BILLION ON OUR CURRENT PLAN OV
THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WHICH WOULD
BE MORE THAN DOUBLE WHAT HAS
EVER BEEN SPENT IN THE T’
HISTORY BECAUSE WE CLEANED UP ITS FINANCIAL OPERATIONS,
BECAUSE WE FOU WAYS TO CREATE
INFRASTRUCTURE TO EXECUTE A
PLAN. OUR PLAN IS REAL AND SPECIFIC
AND DETAILED. WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT JUST
DOES NOT EXIST. MARI HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY
FOR IT? MR. GONZALEZ: YOU CAN MAKE THE
INVESTMENT YOU ARE MAKING
BECAUSE GOVERNOR PATRICK RAISED
TAXES TO INVEST IN
TRANSPORTATION. THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE ADDITIONAL
MONEY, BUT IT IS NOT NEARLY
ENOUGH. YOU DO NOT HAVE A PLAN. YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO FIX THE
T IN 15 YEARS. YOU FILED A REPORT TWO MONTHS
LATER THAT SAYS YOU ARE PLAN IS
MORE LIKE 25 YEARS. I HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN TO RAISE
$3 MILLION EACH YEAR FROM THE
WEALTHY. WHETHER IT IS ENOUGH OR NOT TO
DO EVERYTHING THAT I SAID, WHICH
I BELIEVE IT IS, IT IS $3
BILLION MORE THAN ZERO, WHICH IS
HIS PLAN. GOV. BAKER: IS $3 BILLION PLAN
STARTS I 2023, AT THE END OF
OUR INVESTING $8 BILLION. POINT NUMBER TWO IS THE 25 YEARS
HE TALKS ABOUT. THAT IS WHERE WE STARTED. THAT IS WHAT WE INHERITED FROM
THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION. BECAUSE WE MANAGED TO MAKE
SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENTS IN THE
STATE OF GOOD REPAIR, IN THE
REPAIRED BACKLOG OVER THE LAST
COUPLE YEARS, BIGGER THAN HAS
EVER BEEN DONE SINCE THEY HAD BEEN KEEPING SCORE, WE TOOK 10
YEARS OFF THE STATE OF GOOD
REPAIR. OVER THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS WITH
THE MOMENTUM WE HAVE CREATED, IT
IS REALLY GOING TO START TO FEEL
DIFFERENT OF PEOPLE AS THE
TRAINS AND SIGNAL AND SWITCH
TECHNOLOGY GETS PUT INTO PLACE. WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH A
SYSTEM WHERE EVERYTHING IS 50
YEARS OLD, THE UPGRADES MAKE A
NORM IS DIFFERENT WITH RESPECT
TO RELIABILITY, CAPACITY AND
PERFORMANCE. BOB: WE’RE GOING TO MOVE ON. HOUSING. GOV. BAKER I AM SURE MY
OPPONENT AND I WOULD BE HAPPY TO
TALK ABOUT THIS ALL MIGHT. ADRIAN: HOUSING IN MASSACHUSETTS
RANKS AMONG THE MOST EXPENSIVE
IN THE COUNTRY. HOW CAN THE STATE INCREASE
ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING,
ESPECIALLY FOR WORKING FAMILIES
WHO DO NOT QUALIFY FOR
SUBSIDIZED HOUSING BUT CAN
AFFORD MARKET RACE HOUSING IN AREAS CLOSE TO JOBS AND GOOD
SCHOOLS? GOV. BAKER: HOUSING IS ONE OF
THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WE FACE AS
A COMMONWEALTH
WE USED TO 30,000 UNITS OF
HOUSING EVERY YEAR FOR LIKE, 40
YEAR STARTING IN THE 1990’S THAT
NUMBER FELL TO ABOUT 8000
YEAR. FOR 25 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN
BUILDING LESS THAN HALF NEW
HOUSING WE USED TO BUILD EVERY
YEAR LIKE CLOCKWORK. WE DON’T HAVE MUCH INVENTORY. WHEN THE INVENTORY GOES ON THE
MARKET, PRICES GO UP, PEOPL
CANNOT AFFORD IT AND IT PUSHES
THEM FARTHER AND FARTHER AWAY TO
FIND A PLACE THEY CAN AFFORD. WE WORKED WITH EVERYONE IN THE
SPACE TO GENERATE 100 35,000
UNITS OF HOUSING OVER THE NEXT
FIVE YEARS. TO GET US BACK INTO THE BUSINESS
OF HOUSING PRODUCTION. CAME OUT OF COMMITTEE 12-1, IT
IS CURRENTLY SITTING IN THE
HOUSE COMMITTEE. MY HOPE IS THE LEGISLATURE WILL
ACT ON THAT INFORMALLY OR TAKEN
UP NEXT YEAR BECAUSE WE HAVE GOT
TO BUILD MORE HOUSING HERE IN
THE COMMONWEALT
IT IS A NUMBER ONE ISSUE FOR ME AND AN ISSUE I BELIEVE WE HAVE
TO SOLVE FROM AN EQUITY POINT OF
VIEW, ECONOMIC POINT OF VIE IF
WE TRULY WANT TO BE A PLACE
WHERE YOUNG FAMILIES IN YOUNG
PEOPLE AND MODERATE INCOME FOLKS CAN AFFORD TO LIVE. MR. GONZALEZ: THIS IS A HUGE
CRISIS IN THE STATE. I HEAR ABOUT IT A LOT ON THE
CAMPAIGN TRAIL. OUR AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS
AND ARE BROKEN TRANSPORTATION
SYSTEM ARE THE TWO THINGS THAT
WOULD DRAG OUR ECONOMY BACKWARDS
IF WE DON’T GET SERIOUS ABOUT
IT. I WILL PROVIDE BOLD LEADERSHIP
ON THIS. I WILL DOUBLE TH STATE’S
CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN AFFORDABLE
HOUSING PROJECTS BY
REPRIORITIZING CAPITAL
INVESTMENTS. I AM GOING TO DO REAL REGULATORY
REFORM. WE NEED EVERY COMMUNITY TO BE A
PART OF THE SOLUTION BECAUSE WE
ARE ALL GOING TO START FALLING
BACKWARDS IF THIS DRAGS OUR
ECONOMY DOWN. TH GOVERNOR’S PLAN HE MENTIONED
WAS NOT PASSED BY THE
LEGISLATURE AND IT WOULD HAVE
ASKED MUNICIPALITIES MY SLEEP —
NICE TO LOOSEN ZONING RULES TO
CREATE MORE HOUSING. WE’RE GOING TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT
THIS. I AM GOING TO PASS REAL
REGULATORY REFORM THAT ENSURES
WE ARE INCREASING THE HOUSING
SUPPLY ACROSS THE STATE TO DEAL
WITH THIS CRISIS. GOV. BAKER HOW COME YOU DID NOT
DO THAT WHEN YOU WERE SECRETARY? MR. GONZALEZ: IT WAS NOT MY JOB. GOV. BAKER: WE HAVE HAD A
HOUSING CRISIS HERE FOR A LONG
TIME. DURING YOUR TERM IN OFFICE,
NOBODY DID ANYTHING TO SOLVE
THIS PROBLEM. WE INCREASED THE STATE’S
INVESTMENT IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING
BY 25% AND WE TOOK OFFICE. YOU JUST SIGNED THE LARGEST
HOUSING BOND BILL IN STATE
HISTORY. THE FIRST SERIOUS ATTEMPT TO DO
SOMETHING ABOUT HOUSING
PRODUCTION IN MASSACHUSETTS WAS
DONE BY OUR ADMINISTRATIO
IT IS STILL PENDING BEFORE THE
LEGISLATURE. I BELIEVE WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO
GET IT DONE IN THE INFORMAL
SETTING. MR. GONZALEZ: IT IS NOT
SERIOUS ATTEMPT IN THE HOUSING
ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS DESCRIBE
IT AS A BABY STEP, OR A MINI
STEP, WHICH IS CONSISTENT WITH
THE STATUS QUO APPROACH. I WAS NOT IN CHARGE OF HOUSING
WHEN I WAS THE SECRETARY OF
FINANCE, BUT IT WILL TAKE
RESPONSIBLE FOR IT WHEN I’M
GOVERNOR. YOU HAVE BEEN GOVERNOR FOR FOUR
YEARS. YOU JU PROPOSED A BABY STEP ON
HOUSING IN YOUR THIRD YEAR. IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUG
THIS IS A CRISIS IN THE STATE. THIS IS THE THIRD DEBATE WE HAVE
BEEN IN. YOU KEEP WANTING TO TA ABOUT
THE PATRICK ADMINISTRATION. I HAVE NOT HEARD YOU GIVE A
SINGLE PROPOSAL FOR WHAT YOU
WOULD DO AS GOVERNOR IN THE NEXT
FOUR YEARS. BOB: WE’RE GOING TO MOVE ON. GOV. BAKER: CAN WE TALK ABOUT
OUR $8 BILLION ENTRANCE
ROTATION? BOB: I THINK WE DID TALK ABOUT
THAT. [LAUGHTER]
BO ONTO ANOTHER SPEED ROUND. REMEMBER, SUPERSHORT, OK? THE FIRST QUESTION IS THREE
WORDS. THREE WORD ANSWER. MR. GONZALEZ, THREE WORDS TO
DESCRIBE PRESIDENT TRUMP. MR. GONZALEZ HATEFUL. RACIST. UNAMERICAN. GOV. BAKER ONLY HREE. UM, OUTRAGEOUS. DISGRACEFUL. AND A DIVIDER. BOB: NEX QUESTION, SHOULD THE
WORLD SERIES RED SOX GO TO THE
WHITE HOUSE? GOV. BAKER: I THINK THAT IS
COMPLETELY UP TO THE TEAM. MY GUESS IS IF THEY GET ASKED,
PEOPLE WILL MAKE WHATEVER
DECISION THEY THINK IS BEST FOR
THEM AND I THINK THAT IS OK. MR. GONZALEZ: I’M GOING TO
INVITE THEM TO THE GOVERNOR’S
OFFICE AND I AM GOVERNOR. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ —
GOV. BAKER: GOOD LUCK GETTING
THEM TO COME. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ, WHO IS YOUR
POLITICAL HERO. MR. GONZALEZ: LIVING OR DEAD? BOB: EITHER. MR. GONZALEZ: OK. I DON’T HAVE JUST ONE BUT IF I
HAD TO PICK ONE I WOULD PROBABLY
SAY DEVAL PATRICK. I GOT TO KNOW HIM PERSONALLY, HE
IS THE REAL DEAL, HE WAS IN IT
FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND HAVE A
LOT OF RESPECT FOR HIM. GOV. BAKER: ABRAHAM LINCOLN. NO ONE ELSE IS CLOSE. BOB: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE
FAMILY TRADITION? GOV. BAKER: CHRISTMAS MORNING. EVERYBODY IN THE JAMMIES, COFF
EE, TON OF BREAKFAST. SON IS A BETTER COOK THAN
ANYONE ELSE IN THE FAMILY. SORRY, LAUREN. A LOT OF CHRISTMAS —
BOB: WE ARE GOING TO STOP YOU
BECAUSE WE DON’T WANT TO GET YOU
IN MORE TROUBLE WITH YOUR WIFE. [LAUGHTER]
MR. GONZALEZ: SUNDAY NIGHT
DINNER
THE CAMPAIGN SCREWED THIS UP A
LITTLE BIT, BUT IT IS THE TIME
USUALLY WHEN THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS ALL THERE WITH THE KIDS AND
WE HAVE DINNER TOGETHER AND WE
ACTUALLY TALK. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ WHAT IS THE
NUMBER ONE THING ON YOUR BUCKET
LIST AFTER POLITICS? MR. GONZALEZ: I HAVE NO IDEA. HANGING OUT WITH MY WIF
BOB: GOVERNOR BAKER, BUCKET LIST
AFTER POLITICS. GOV. BAKER: I WOULD LIK TO, UH,
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A TRIP WITH
MY WIFE TO SOMEPLACE SHE WANTS
TO GO. BOB: GOOD COME BACK. GOV. BAKER: AS JAY POINTED OUT,
THIS JOB SUC UP A LOT OF TIME. THERE IS A LOT OF PLACES SHE
WOULD LIKE TO VISIT AND I WOULD
LIKE TO TAKE HER TO A COUPLE OF
THEM. MARIA: LET’S CONTINUE WITH THE
QUESTIONS. ANTHONY: GOVERNOR BAKER, THERE
IS A LAS VEGAS-STYLE AS YOU KNOW
IN SPRINGFIELD NOW BUT MANY
WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS TOWNS DO
NOT HAVE HIGH-SPEED BROADBAND
SERVICE. IT IS 2018. WHAT IS YOUR PLAN TO GIVE THESE
COMMUNITIES THE SAME
OPPORTUNITIES AS CITIES LIKE
BOSTON OR WORCESTER? GOV. BAKER: THIS CAME TO THE
ISSU OF THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
AND ME SHORTLY AFTER WE TOOK
OFFICE. 53 COMMUNITIES DID NOT HAVE
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET. AND WE PUT TOGETHER TEAM AND
WE WORKED WITH THE LEGISLATURE
TO GET ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO
SUPPORT THIS. THEN WE PUT TOGETHER IN MENU
THAT LOCAL COMMUNITIES COULD
CHOOSE FROM TO GET TO HIGH-SPEED
INTERNET. THEIR ARE BIG SWATCHS WHICH ARE
COMPLICATED. OF THOSE 53, 50 EITHER HAVE IT
OR ARE WORKING ON A PLAN WITH
LOCAL UTILITY AND CABLE COMPANY. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE ALL 53 WITH
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SOONER
RATHER THAN LATER. THEY WILL TELL YOU IT IS THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY
FOR THEM. WE CONSIDER THIS TO BE A
FUNDAMENTAL OPPORTUNITY FOR US
TO SERVE THEM AND TO LEVERAGE
STATE RESOURCES TO GET SOMETHING
REALLY IMPORTANT DONE FOR THEM. MR. GONZALEZ: YEAH, BUT THAT IS
FOUR YEARS LATER AND SOME STILL
DO NOT HAVE IT. THIS IS LIKE RUNNING WATER AT
THIS POINT. HIGH-SPEED INTERNET IS CRITICAL. I GO OUT TO THE BERKSHIRES AND
HEAR STORIES OF STUDENTS WHO SIT
AND LIBRARY PARKING LOTS TO DO
THEIR HOMEWOR BECAUSE THEY
DON’T HAVE HIGH-SPEED INTERNET
AT HOME. IT IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. GOVERNOR, I WILL DO WHATEVER
WE NEED TO DO TO GET THIS
ADDRESSED AS QUICKLY AS
POSSIBLE. I WANT TO SAY ANOTHER THING. PEOPLE OUT IN WESTERN
MASSACHUSETTS, NOT JUST ON THIS
YOU BUT — THIS ISSUE BUT
OTHERS, OFTEN FEEL NEGLECTED,
AND LEGITIMATELY SO. I WANT TO BE THE GOVERNOR OF THE
WHOLE STATE. THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER ISSUES
AND CHALLENGES THEY HAVE IN
WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS THAT NEED
ADDRESSING
THEY DESERVE A PROPORTIONAL
SHARE OF THE ATTENTION IN RESOURCE FROM STATE GOVERNMENT,
AND I WILL GIVE IT TO THEM. I WANTED TO HAVE A DEBATE IN
WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. THE GOVERNOR DECLINED. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT DISCUSS
ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO
THEM. BOB: —
GOV. BAKER THE SPRINGFIELD
REPUBLICAN IN THEIR ENDORSEMENT
OF OUR CAMPAIGN SAID THAT MANY
GOVERNORS HAVE PROMISED TO PAY
ATTENTION TO WESTERN MASS, MOST DON’
OUR ADMINISTRATION HAS MORE THAN
DELIVERED ON THAT. WE ARE ENORMOUSLY PROUD OF THAT. JANET: MR. GONZALEZ, THE PILGRIM
NUCLEAR POWE PLANT IS SCHEDULED
TO SHUT DOWN NEXT SPRING. WITHOUT A FEDERAL PLAN TO DEAL
WITH THE DECADES OF NUCLEAR
WASTE, THAT MEANS IT WILL REMAIN
INDEFINITELY –
DO YOU WORRY ABOUT THIS AND WHAT
WOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT? MR. GONZALEZ: OF COURSE I D
THIS IS A FEDERALLY REGULATED
ISSUE. BUT THE GOVERNOR SHOULD BE
ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN ADVOCATING
FOR THE INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE
OF THAT REGION AND OUR ENTIRE
TATE. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN,
PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERN. SO, WE SHOULD BE CLOSING IT AS
QUICKLY AS WE CAN AND STORING
THE SPENT FUEL IN AS SAFE AWAY
AS POSSIBLE. MY PREFERENCE WOULD BE TO TAKE
IT OFF SITE. I KNOW THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS
NOT PROVIDED IN ADDITIONAL SITE. I WAS GLAD TO SEE THAT THE
COMPANY THAT OWNS THE FACILITY
IS NOW PLANNING TO AT LEAST GET
THE SPENT FUEL AWAY FROM —
FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SEA. BUT I WOULD BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED
IN THIS AS GOVERNOR. I DON’T THINK BASED ON WHAT I
HAVE HEARD GOVERNOR BAKER HAS
BEEN AS ACTIVELY ENGAGED. BUT I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THOSE
AREAS WHERE WE NEED A GOVERNOR
WHO IS ADVOCATING FOR THE VALUES
AND INTERESTS OF PEOPLE OF THE
STATE. JANET: GOVERNO HE HAS
SUGGESTED YOU HAVE NOT BEEN
ENGAGED ENOUGH IN THIS ISSUE. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR ALL THIS
NUCLEAR WASTE? GOV. BAKER: OUR BIG OPPORTUNI
HAS BEEN TO WORK WITH THE
ATTORNEY GENERAL AND WITH A
LOCAL ADVISORY GROUP THAT W PUT
TOGETHER BY WORKING WITH THE
LEGISLATURE. IS A STATUTORY COMMUNITY GROUP. WORK WITH THE FEDERAL
REGULATORS ON THIS. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF
OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL AND PEOPLE IN OUR
ADMINISTRATION TO PUSH THE
FEDERAL REGULATORS TO DO MORE
AND HAVE MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS
WE HAVE ALSO SPENT A LOT OF TIME
WAS SENATOR WARREN ON THIS. I THINK IT IS CRITICAL. I AGREE COMPLETELY WITH MY
OPPONENT THAT AT THE END OF THE
DA HERE THERE ARE SERIOUS
ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS KIND
OF FUEL. OUR WAY OF DEALING WITH THAT HAS
BEEN TO WORK WITH THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL OF THA UNITY —
COMMUNITY IN NET AREA AND OUR
FEDERAL SENATORS AND LEGISLATORS
TO MAKE SURE WE CAN HOLD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S FEET TO THE
FIRE ON THIS. BOB: A CLIMATE CHANGE QUESTION. A STUDENT AT UMA BOSTON’S
GRADUATE STUDENTS OMITTED THIS
QUESTION. THE UNITED NATIONS WARNS
DRAMATIC ACTION IS NEEDED IN THE
NEXT DECADE TO AVOID GLOBAL
CLIMATE CALAMITY. DOES CARBON PRICING, A TAX ON
CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS, MAKE
SENSE IN MASSACHUSETTS? MR. GONZALEZ: YES IT DOES AND I
HAVE BEEN A PROPONENT OF IT
THROUGHOUT MY CAMPAIGN. SPENT A LOT OF TIME MEETING WITH
ECONOMISTS AND OTHERS, ALL OF
WHOM AGREE THAT WE NEED THIS
REALLY IMPORTANT INCENTIVE TO
DRIV US TO TRUE CLEAN ENERGY
ECONOMY AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS ONE AREA AMONG MANY
WHERE I WILL PROVIDE THE BOLD
LEADERSHIP WE NEED THAT WE DON’T
HAVE RIGHT NOW. I WILL ACCELERATE OUR TRANSITION
TO RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. I WILL OPPOSE INTO EVERYTHING IN
MY POWER TO STOP THE EXPANSION
OF NATURAL GAS PIPELINE
INFRASTRUCTURE, WHICH WE DON’T
NEED AND WILL FURTHER OUR
DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUEL. I SUPPORT CARBON PRICING. ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS HAVE
CONSISTENTLY GIVEN GOVERNOR
BAKER’S WORK ON CLIMATE CHANGE A
C GRADE. I AM PROUD TO SAY I HAVE THE
ENDORSEMENTS OF SOME OF THOSE
GROUPS INCLUDING THE SIERRA
CLUB BECAUSE I HAVE A BOLD
AGENDA IN THIS AREA. AND THIS IS THE MOST SERIOUS
THREAT TO OUR WORLD. AND THIS U.N. REPORT THAT THE
QUESTION MENTIONED IN THE
QUESTION SHOWS THAT IT IS EVEN
MORE SERIOUS A A MORE URGENT
THREAT THAN WE THOUGHT. WE HAVE TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT IT. GOV. BAKER LET ME START BY
SAYING I WAS HONORED TO SEE THE
ENVIRONMENTAL LEAGUE OF
MASSACHUSETTS, THE BIGGEST AND
BROADEST COALITION OF
ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, CHOSE TO STAY NEUTRAL IN THIS
RACE AFTER HEARING FROM BOTH MY
OPPONENT AND ME RECENTLY ADDED
FOR HIM THEY HELP. BECAUSE — THE HELD. BECAUSE OF MANY OF THE KEY
THINGS WE HAVE BEEN DOING. WE ARE MOVING AGGRESSIVELY AWAY
FROM FOSSIL FUELS. WE ARE THE ONES WHO PUT A
PROGRAM IN PLACE THAT BASICALLY
CHANGED PEOPLE’S INTEREST IN
OFFSHORE WIND. WE ARE NOW GOING TO HAVE PEOPLE
ALL THE WAY DOWN THE EAST COAST
ENGAGING IN THIS IN WAYS THEY
DIDN’T PREVIOUSLY. IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE ARE THE
ONLY STATE I KNOW OF MAKING BIG
INVESTMENTS ALONGSIDE PRIVATE
ENTITIES IN STORAGE. STORAGE OVERTIME IS HOW YOU TAKE
WIND AND SOLAR AND OTHER
INTERMITTENT ENERGY SOURCES AND
TURN THEM INTO 24/7 365
OPPORTUNITIES. WE ALSO HAVE A HYDRO PROJECT
WHICH WI DELIVER CLEAN HYDRO
ENERGY HERE AS WELL. BOB: CARBON TAX, Y OR NAY. GOV. BAKER: I THINK THE WAY TO
DO THIS ONE IS TO TRY TO DO THIS
THE SAME WAY THE REGGIE PROGRAM
WORKS. REGG IS A PROGRAM DONE AMONG
THE SIX NEW ENGLAND STATES PLUS
SOME OTHER ONES IN THE
MID-ATLANTIC AREA, WHERE WE
BASICALLY TRAD ON CARBON FOR
POWER. IT HAS WORKED REALLY WELL ACROSS
ALL THE STATES WHO PARTICIPA
AND IT HAS HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON
CARBON EMISSIONS AND POWER. WE HAVE BEEN TALKING TO THE
OTHER STATES ABOUT PUTTING
TOGETHER A REGIONAL APPROACH TO
DO WITH TRANSPORTATION. MARIA: LET’S MOVE ON WITH AN
ISSUE THAT IMPACTS A LOT OF
FAMILIES. ADRIAN: I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT
OPIOIDS. GOVERNOR BAKER, YOU BOOSTED
PENALTIES FOR TRAFFICKING AND
CLAMPED DOWN ON OVERPRESCRIBING. HOW HAVE YOU HELD COMPANIES THAT
HAVE MISLED CONSTITUENTS ABOUT
THEIR ADDICTIVE PROPERTIES
ACCOUNTABLE? GOV. BAKER: FIRST O ALL, THIS
IS AN ISSUE I RAN FOR GOVERNOR
ON — IS NOT AN ISSUE I’M RAN
FOR GOVERNOR ON, IT JUST FOUND
ME. EVERYWHERE I WENT, EVERYONE HAD
HEARTBREAKING STORIES ABOUT THIS
EPIDEMIC. AND I AM PROUD OF THE WORK WE
HAVE DONE ON THI
WE ARE A NATIONAL LEADER ON
FINDING THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC HERE
IN THE COMMONWEALTH AND HAVE
DONE SO ON A BIPARTISAN BASIS. THE BIGGEST AND BEST WAY FOR U
TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO CRACK DOWN
ON OPIOID MANUFACTURERS WAS TO
WORK WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
AND TO MAKE SURE SHE HAD ALL THE
DATA THAT SHE NEEDE TO CREATE WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE CALLING THE
MOST COMPREHENSIVE, DETAILED,
AND SIGNIFICANT LAWSUIT THAT HAS
BEEN FILED BY ANY STATE AGAINST
PURDUE PHARMA. I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE WORK
THAT WE DID IN CONJUNCTION WITH
HER OFFICE ON THAT IN A WAS
PROUD TO STAND WITH HER AS SHE
ANNOUNCED IT. ADRIAN: WHAT WOULD YOU DO? MR. GONZALEZ: BUT YOU WANT TO
REPLACE HER? I WOULD WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH
THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO GO AFTER
THE FORMER SUIT WHO ARE A HUGE
PART OF THIS PROBLEM. THEY WERE MARKETING THESE
ADDICTIVE PILLS WITHOUT TELLING
PEOPLE THEY WERE ADDICTIVE. THEY SHOULD BE PAYING FOR A LOT
OF THE COSTS AND TREATMENT
RESOURCES WE NEED TO DEAL WITH
THIS CRISIS. AND THIS IS A CRISIS. I APPRECIATE THE FACT THE
GOVERNOR HAS MADE THE OPEN YOU
WOULD CRISIS A PRIORITY. BUT WE NEED TO BE MUCH MORE
AGGRESSIVE AND TAKING IT ON. IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH THE
ATTORNEY GENERAL COULD GO AFTER
FROM SUNOCO COMPANIES, I WOULD
EXPAND THE TREATMENT RESOURCES
WE HAVE. WE DON’T HAVE NEARLY ENOUGH TO
MEET THE DEMAND FOR TREATMENT. I THINK WE NEED TO TRY NEW
THINGS LIKE SAFE INJECTION
SITES, COVERING MEDICAL
MARIJUANA AS ALTERNATIVE PAIN
THERAPY TO THESE ADDICTIVE
PILLS. I THINK WE NEED TO STOP TREATING
PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED BY
CRIMINALS. THE GOVERNOR KEEPS SENDING
PEOPLE W ARE IN TREATMENT LEFT
NOT COMMITTED A CRIME TO A
FACILITY WHERE THEY ARE OVERSEEN
BY CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS AND NOT
GETTING TREATMENT. I WILL SHUT THAT DOWN. ANTHON GENTLEMEN, OVER THE
YEARS MASSACHUSETTS HAS
PIONEERED A NUMBER OF BIG IDEAS
WE ESTABLISHED THE FIRST PUBLIC
SCHOOL, THIS WAS THE STATE THAT
MA GAY MARRIAGE LEGAL, THE FIRST STATE. IT ESTABLISHED ROMNEY CARE WHICH
MORPHED INTO THE AFFORDABLE CARE
ACT. JAY GONZALEZ WHAT IS THE BIG
IDEA THAT WILL DEFINE YOUR
GOVERNORSHIP? MR. GONZALEZ: THERE ARE MANY. ANTHONY: I AM LOOKING FOR ONE. MR. GONZALEZ: I WANT US TO BE
THAT MASSACHUSETTS WHERE WE HAVE
A GOVERNOR WHO IS BEING
AMBITIOUS AND ASPIRATIONAL ABOUT
WHAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH. I HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT
ASPECTS OF MY AGENDA I THINK
WOULD FIT INTO THAT CATEGORY. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IS TO
BE THE FIRST TO GIVE EVE CHILD
HIGH-QUALITY ACCESS TO CHILD
CARE AND PRESCHOOL
THIS IS GAME CHANGING FOR YOUNG
KIDS IN TERMS OF THEIR SUCCESS. IT ALLOWS PARENTS TO GO TO WORK
TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES. WE ARE THE MOST EXPENSIVE STATE
IN THE COUNTRY. WHAT I AM PROPOSING AND WHAT I
WOULD DO BY THE END OF MY FIRST
TERM IS ENSURE EVERY CHILD AND
FAMILY FROM ZERO TO AGE FIV
BIRTH TO AGE FIVE — NOT JUST
PRESCHOOL, WILL HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY AFFORDABLE
CHILDCARE AND PRESCHOOL. WE WILL GET THAT DONE. ANTHONY: GOVERNOR BAKER, THE BIG
IDEA THAT WOULD DEFINE YOUR
SECOND TERM? GOV. BAKER: THE BIGGEST ONE IS
THIS CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUE. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING
MUNICIPAL REVOLVER BODHI
PLANNING EXERCISES WITH ALL 351
CITIES AND TOWNS. THIS IS A NATIONAL PROGRAM WE
HAVE PUT TOGETHER. NO ONE ELSE HAS DONE ANYTHING
LIKE THIS AND OTHER STATES ARE
ADOPTING IT. ONCE IT IS DONE WE WILL DO HAS A
MITIGATION PLANNING FOR THOSE
COMMUNITIES. ONCE WE HAVE THAT, THAT IS THE
BLUEPRINT FOR DOING WITH CLIMATE
CHANGE. I THINK IN MANY RESPECTS, THIS
HA URGENCY, IT NEEDS TO GET
DONE, AND WE ARE SITTING AND
NATION FRAMEWORK THAT MANY
OTHER STATES ARE GRABBING ONTO
AND PURSUING ON THEIR OWN. THAT COMES ON THE HEELS OF
CREATING A NATIONAL MODEL FOR
HOW TO DO WITH THE OPIOID
EPIDEMIC. AS I SAID EARLIER, A NATIONAL,
SORT OF, RUSH TO OFFSHORE WIND
BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DID IN
CREATING THE FIRST AFFORDABLE
OFFSHORE WIND PROJECT. MR. GONZALEZ THERE IS NOT
ANYONE WHO FOLLOWS WHAT IS
HAPPENING ON CLIMATE CHANG AND
WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THE STATE
WITH EXCEPT THE GOVERNOR IS
BEING AMBITIOUS ENOUGH ON THIS. OTHER STATES ARE STARTING TO AND
WILL BE OUTPACING US IF WE STAY
ON HIS SCHEDUL
WE NEED TO BE MUCH MORE
AGGRESSIVE IN DEVELOPING
OFFSHORE WIND AND GETTING RID OF CONSTRAINTS ON SOLAR
DEVELOPMENT, WHICH THE GOVERNO
PUT IN PLACE, WHICH HAVE REDUCED
THE RATE AT WHICH SOLAR IS BEING
DEVELOPED AND WE HAVE LOST 3000
JOBS IN THE SOLAR INDUSTRY IN THE LAST YEAR. I WILL BE BOLD ON THIS ISSUE AND
MANY. EARLY EDUCATION AN CARE,
SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE, A LOT
OF ISSUES WHERE WE SHOULD BE A
LEADER, AND WE WILL BE WHEN I AM
GOVERNOR. GOV. BAKER YOU HAVE MENTIONED
THAT $1 BILLION FIVE TIMES SINCE
THIS DEBATE STARTED. THREE TIMES AND TRANSPORTATION,
JUST AGAIN ON EARLY CHILDHOOD
ED. IT IS DISHONEST TO STAND HERE IN
FRONT OF THE VOTERS, SAY YOU
WILL BE BOLD, THEN TALK ABOUT
INITIATIVES THE COST BILLIONS OF
DOLLARS THAT YOU DON’T HAVE THE
MONEY TO PAY FOR. WHEN I TALKED ABOUT IN THEORY
SPECIFIC DETAIL ARE THINGS WE
HAVE ALREADY DONE, THINGS WE ARE
PLANNING TO DO THAT ARE ALREADY
PROGRAMMED IN BUDGETED. I DON’T THINK IT IS FAIR FOR HIM
TO TELL THE VOTERS HE CAN DO A,
B, AN C, AND NOT HAVE RESOURCES
TO DELIVER. MR. GONZALEZ SINGLE-PAYER
HEALTH CARE WILL SAVE US MONEY
IF WE DO IT THOUGHTFULLY. YES, IT IS BEING BOLD. I HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN TO RAISE
THE MONEY WE NEED TO DO THE
THINGS I WANT TO DO THAT WILL
COST MORE MONEY. WHAT IS NOT BEING HONEST IS YOU
KEEP TELLING PEOPLE YOU HAVE A
15 YEAR PLAN TO FIX THE T, Y
WHEN YOU HAD TO TELL THE TRUTH
TO THE GOVERNMENT YOU SAID YOU
COULD NOT DO IT IN 15 YEARS. ARE YOU BEING TRUTHFUL TO THE
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OR TRUTHFUL
TO THE PEOPLE OF MASSACHUSETTS? GOV. BAKER: THE 2016 AND 2017
PLAN WE GAVE TO THE FED WHICH
WAS BASED ON WHAT WE WERE LEFT
WITH, SAID 25 YEARS. THE RECENT DATA, BECAUSE WE
SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON OUR
REPAIR BACKLOG THIS PAST YEAR
AND THE YEAR BEFORE, IS 15
YEARS. WE ARE THE ONES WHO FIT — PUT
THE FISCAL MANAGEMENT AND TROLL
BOARD IN PLACE WHICH MEETS EVERY
WEEK AND GIVES PEOPLE ACCESS TO
ALL THE INFORMATION THEY NEED. DATA NO LONGER RELEVANT. IT IS A 15 YEAR PLAN. MR. GONZALEZ: JUN 2017,, TWO
MONTHS AFTER YOU SAID IT WOULD
BE 15 YEARS. AND 15 YEARS IS RIDICULOUS. MARIA: REALLY QUICKLY SPEED RUN
QUESTIONS. WE HAVE GONE FROM FIVE AND NOW
TO ONE. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR
OPPONENT. GO. MR. GONZALEZ: STATUS QUO
GOVERNOR. GOV. BAKER: SMART, AMBITIOUS,
AND PUBLIC SERVANT. BO THE HOUR HAS SPED BY. WE NEED TO MOVE TO YOUR CLOSING
ARGUMENTS VERY QUICKLY. YOU EACH HAVE 60 SECONDS. A COIN TOSS DECIDED THAT MR. GONZALEZ GOES FIRST. MR. GONZALEZ: THANK YOU. I HAVE RUN INTO A LOT OF PEOPLE
WHO SAY THEY THINK CHARLIE BAKER
IS DOING A GOOD JOB
BUT WHEN I ASK THEM WHY THEY
THINK SO, THE ANSWER IS NEVER
THAT HE IS DOING A GREAT JOB FIXING OUR TRANSPORTATION OR
MAKING PROGRESS ON ANOTHER
ISSUE. IT IS USUALLY SOMETHING LIKE, HE
SEEMS NICE, AND I’M REALLY GLAD
HE IS NOT ONE OF THOSE CRAZY
RIGHT WING EXTREMISTS. THE MEASURE OF WHETHER OUR
GOVERNOR IS DOING A GOOD JOB
SHOULD NOT BE THAT HE IS NICE
AND IS NOT CRAZY. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO LOWER
OUR EXPECTATIONS. IT IS TIME TO RAISE THEM. I WILL PROVIDE THE BOLD
LEADERSHIP WE NEED TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE FOR WORKING FAMILIES
IN THE STATE AND TO STAND UP
AGAINST DONALD TRUMP’S HATEFUL
AGENDA. I KNOW I AM THE LITTLE GUY IN
THE SELECTION. LITERALLY, AND FIGURATIVELY. I ALSO KNOW THAT LITTLE GUYS
OVERWHELM OVERWHELMING ODDS WHEN
THEIR CAUSE IS THE AIM HIGH AND
WORK HARD AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER
ALONG THE WAY. DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THIS
ELECTION HAS BEEN DECIDED AND
THAT YOUR VOTE DOES NOT MATTER. BOB: THAT IS YOUR 60 SECONDS. MR. GONZALEZ: THANK YOU VERY
MUCH. I HOPE TO EARN YOUR VOTE ON
NOVEMBER 6. GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL WANTED
THINK THE CONSORTIUM AGAIN FOR
HOSTING THIS DEBATE AND I WANT
TO THANK THE AUDIENCE FOR
LISTENING. I ALSO WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH I
APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY I
HAVE HAD OVER THE PAST FOUR
YEARS TO GET THE PEOPLE — TO
GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE OF
MASSACHUSETTS. THE TIME I SPENT TRAVELING THIS
COMMONWEALTH, LISTENING TO YOUR
THOUGHTS AND CONCERNS IN
INCORPORATING THOSE INTO THE WAY
WE BUILD POLICY AND GET THINGS
DONE, HAS BEEN A TRUE JOY FOR ME. AND I KNOW FOR THE LIEUTENANT
GOVERNOR AS WEL
ONE OF THE THINGS WE PLEDGED TO
DO WHEN WE TOOK OFFICE IS WE
WOULD WORK TOGETHER WITH OUR
COLLEAGUES AND LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT TO MOVE THIS
COMMONWEALTH FORWARD
OUR ECONOMY IS BOOMING, OU
SCHOOLS ARE TERRIFIC, BUT THE
FINAL THING I WANT TO SAY
TONIGHT IS OUR PEOPLE ARE GREAT. AND HOPE YOU GIVE US A CHANCE
TO CONTINUE TO WOR ON WHAT WE
ARE DOING UNDER ARMOUR SIXTH. — ON NOVEMBER 6. BOB: THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MARIA: EARLY VOTING ENDS
TOMORROW, AND ELECTION DAY IS ON
TUESDAY. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. GETTING. GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY.

30 thoughts on “Charlie Baker, Jay Gonzalez spar in last debate before election

  • Baker thinks his strength is that he's bipartisan, but he admits over and over again that he's selling out his beliefs to "support the ticket". Lol.

  • Baker you are a broken record!!! You cannot sit in the middle unfortunately, either you are for the everyday Joe or for the execs but all I know is that you don't have the everyday Joe in mind (look how he didn't even show sympathy on those 3,000 workers that lost their jobs). Jay's got my vote and everyone else who is looking at todays economy in a realistic manner. VOTE JAY GONZALEZ NOV 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • any politician who tries to take my constitutional rights away loses my vote, i guess im not voting for either democrat here

  • As the democrat Commies, it's the Governers fault for the gas explosion or its President Trumps. The government in Mass. is a bunch of blundering fools! Does nothing for the people except take our money and regulate everything President trump is a great president. Pocahontas is a liar, and a cheat proved fact November 6 vote red. Gonzalez how is Antonio Gramsci doing?…oh he's dead. Traffic the Democrats I thought took care of that the big dig? You're a joke. The t has been a crooked pot of gold for every Democrat communes party shills!

  • Charlie baker should run against trump in the 2020 republican primaries. Split the republican party and gain the centered vote from across America

  • Baker "Here's what we have been doing"

Gonzales "Four years later, thats not enough. I have a 'comprehensive plan' that i wont disclose"

  • Gonzalez is not articulate at all. Mostly CNN style Parrot talking points which is not going to help people from MA.

  • Baker looked very stupid when at 14:27 Gonzalez points out that Baker supports McMahon for Attorney General and that McMahon believes citizens have the right to own assault weapons and that immigrants are savages. First Baker tried to dodge that point but when Gonzalez didn't let him hide from the question the best Baker could come up with is "I said I would support McMahon for Attorney General and I will live up to what I said."

  • Gonzalez plans to tax private colleges more? colleges claim they do not have enough funds for everything they'd like to do along with help students with tuition at their school. So Gonzalez plans to tax them on they're endowments taking money away from those two things, therefore raising the cost of higher education for the student which is already absurd and take away money from the schools facilities and programs. Gonzalez wants to tax the "wealthy" for tens of billions for roads and other services. How much should we tax these people 95% of their income? All of his complaints of Baker is "it hasn't been done yet" he fails to acknowledge how much things cost and the importance to maintain a balanced budget along with the difficulty of generating billions of dollars.

  • Governor Baker,. Do you believe in equal law or special treatment for families of Government? If not could you please provide an update on your son's case who's been accused of groping a sleeping Woman

  • Watching this there are things I like better about each candidate. One thing that really concerns me is Charlie Baker is trying to play both sides. I don't believe it is possible to play that position as the Republican party has demonstrated they have moved too far to the right, and don't respect bipartisanship. Baker talks openly about resisting Trump, but the problem goes beyond that. The entire GOP is the problem. Gonzalez is right that Baker can't play both sides. It just isn't possible in today's climate.

  • Hay, GOZO. Spend my money, as you worked for it. Yes, hire many more people, who are paying for it? Me. the government is the overseers, and they suck at it. Gonzo is a communist and that's all a Progressive is. Don't VOAT BLUE gun control GONZO IS LYING VOAT RED!

  • I'm voting for Baker here as he does a lot for Massachusetts, if you want to make a difference then vote blue for the people in congress.

  • I'm a Democrat but love what Baker has done for Massachusetts, he has my vote. He helped my people when Maria hit the island and many came to Massachusetts..
